I have been a toyota tech for 5 years now and I will tell you one thing, the 3vz(3.0L) is a horribly designed, choked out, gas pig. I own a 92 ext cab sr5 pickup and just bought a 96 taco.(92 is for sale) The 5vz(3.4L) is way more than a slight redesign of the 3v5. The 3vz is the most heinous POS to work on other than the late 80s supra. Engine rebuild around 22 hrs of work, 15 vacuum lines plus coolant fuel and EGR pipe(which breaks on a lot of trucks) to remove the plenum(upper intake).
I'm using 35% less gas per week compared to the completely rebuilt 3.0L.
I just about did the 3.4 swap but cash got a little tight and delayed that.
3.4L advantages- vvt, coil over plug, a intake that doesnt have a 2 180 degree turns in its flow pattern, less than half the emissions junk, OBD2 which will give a relevent code when there is a problem, mass air sensor that isnt a restrictive flapper door, 4 valves per cyl.
So yeah for Sale 1 1992 toyota pickup v6 5spd, sr5, pwr windows locks, fac sunroof, ome rear springs with ome nitro charger shocks, 1.5" to 2" of lift torsoin bars cranked in front, 31" bfg mud terrians on stock 15" alloys, 380000km, rebuilt motor with new oil pump, water pump rod bearings, piston rings, clutch assembly, t-belt, upper idler, running flexilite electric fan on a recently replace radiator, new pads new rotors, high angle cv boots, newer battery, White in color new front bumper and right front fender due to rust. 8300$ can. in Calgary Alberta
So in conclusion 4cyl as long as timing chain is intact(gets expensive when front cover is chewed up) is a solid motor. no complaints from this guy.

16 Years on ExPo. Whoa!!
I, too, genuinely hate the 3VZ V6 for all of the same reasons. I have a couple friends now who have also put complete rebuilds and heads into, them several times even. Besides the common head gasket problem, it really is a completely underpowered, choked up gas pig, besides the constant exhaust valve issues to the passenger rear cyl... Miserably designed and unnecessarily complicated. And I agree that the 3.4L 5VZ V6 is a great engine.
