1996 montero ls 4h issue

Good Evening,
My 1996 Montero LS 3.0 with 162k has an issue with the 4wd system. The issue is when I put it into 4h it feels like something is slipping. The rpm's will go up but the speed barely increases. When I put it into 4HL it stops the slipping issue and we move right along. 4L works as well. The tranny does not slip in 2wd.

I will be changing the 4wd vacuum solenoid next payday but don't think that effects the slipping issue, I could be wrong.

What could cause the slipping in 4H and not anywhere else?

Thanks

Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining.

Did you diagnose that the solenoid was in fact faulty before you throw parts at it?

Cheers

I haven't tested the solenoid yet. I have to wait till payday to even buy a new solenoid. That is at the end of the month

I have the automatic hubs. Would the manual hubs improve reliability?
yes but only if you had other swaps too. Overall it’s not necessary. If you had manual locking hubs that were not engaged, then you could get symptoms like yours when switched to 4h unlock center diff (all wheel drive)

I will check hopefully tomorrow if my solenoid works. And also see if my front hubs are locking up.
