Hello Amigos.

Just beginning the build of my 2001 Toyota Tacoma for, hopefully retirement in a couple of years, expedition of wherever I end up going.

This is the start.
I just took possession of the first stage or my build, which is a front and rear bumper from Hefty Fabrications here in Colorado Springs. These are the first and absolutely no the last they have built for Tacoma's. These guys really know how to build them.

I just ordered the upgrade for my suspension from Toytech. Bilstein coil-overs for the front, and Bilstein for the rear with OME Dakar full springs. After that comes the ARB rear locker, then the A/T Flipack.

Wow. Those look great. Seem to be another great option for the Tacomas (and possibly the 3rd Gen 4Runners--for the front at least).

I really like the shorter double swing-out idea. Any idea what/where the spindles are from that they are using on the rear swing-outs? And what about for the latching mechanism?--what are they using? Can you get a close-up pic of it?

I will take some tomorrow of the latches. I know they use Timken bearings on the spindles, but have no idea where the spindles are from. I am sure you could ask them, they are really nice people.

Those are great looking bumpes. I would do yourself a favor and do the end-cap mod sooner than later, having now fixed a handful of failed end-caps including my own truck... its time/money well spent to not worry about damaging your fender when the bumper wing flexes into it not to mention damage to the bumper brackets.

Thank you. I am new at this, so please explain to me End Cap mod please.

I like the double swing out. How solid of a lockup does it have? I'm looking at a Gas can capable rear swing out and this seems like a solid option.

The gas can does swing out. I will post pics of the whole thing tomorrow.

Those bumpers look really GOOD. I am having a local fab shop build me a set for my Tundra so thanks for the ideas!

I'm having a hard time trying to decide what fog lights to use in my bumper. What lights did you use for the recessed fogs in the bumper?

Again...very nice set up!

Brief hijack here...

Hey Kurt, you mentioned doing a write-up on the end-cap mod a little while back. I'm going to drop my ARB pretty soon to do just that - refresh our memories and encourage us with a little guidance from "the minds at Cruiser Outfitters"...

End hijack.

Scottn - I'm sorry man, but these Tacoma's are just sooo overdone, it's just not doing it for me. This one is particularily ugly... (see sig line below). ;)

Looking really good overall. In addition to the end-cap mod Kurt recommended I'd also suggest looking at rear frame reinforcements for the weight of the loaded rear bumper and all the gear you'll likely be sporting now routinely and then all the other trash you'll be hauling when you take it out on trips. Relatively inexpensive overall and not time consuming.

One of the best mods I ever made to the truck for drivability and supports a well-documented weak-point on our frames.

Also, be prepared for the Dakar leaf pack to sag in about a year with your intended use. Come back and ask us about their AAL to correct that. I was talking to Buddy King from ARB about that this last fall at an event and he went into detail about the history of that corporate decision for a "one size fits all" leaf pack. The AAL is the way to go for your rig all kitted out the way it is.

See you on the trail!
