If you are interested in these Mitsubishi Monteros you will see why the 2003 and on model years are very desirable. They have the traction control system that works similar to Toyota’s A-Trac found in the more recent Land Cruiser. The 2003’s also have the 3.8 Liter engine which is bump in displacement and HP from early gen 3 Monteros. The larger engines also came with the much improved 5 speed transmission over early 4 speeds. The Limited trim also has 2wd, AWD, 4H, and 4L in the ‘Super Select’ transfer case. This is a real bonus over part time 4wd systems as it can be driven in AWD on pavement and will not bind the drivetrain.

I have owned this Montero since January 2018. I purchased at 92,000 miles and put the last 28k on it. I was given all the original maintenance records which I have inputted into a spreadsheet that I can share with you. This is from mile 0 to current mileage so hopefully it can be useful to the next owner. The original owner owned it from 2003 to 2017 and serviced mainly at his dealer.

The paint is in good condition for its age (17 years old) with a very low number of scratches. Only a slight brush on the front right bumper. No dents, or body damage. All original trim remains. Windows are free of cracks (Windshield replaced in the last 3 months and has Safelite warranty). Interior leather is in good shape, and dash is free of cracks. Power seats, windows, mirrors all function as it should.

Per the vehicle's records the timing belt and water pump was changed on Jan 2017 at 75,000 miles. During my ownership I rehauled the suspension. I had Adrenaline Off Road in Burtonsville, Maryland install Old Man Emu lift springs and Bilstein 4600 shocks. After the lift 4 Wheel Parts installed Siberian Bushings the upper/lower control arms front and back. New Toyo LT265/75R16 (32”) Open Country A/T II Tires were installed and a 4 wheel alignment was performed. All these items were done at 104,000 miles. I also added the Adventure Driven Designs front skid plate, trailer hitch, yakima roof bars, and Pioneer 1300 Nex Headunit (with Apple Carplay and backup camera). See full details for regular maintenance items performed. All fluid changed with synthetic lube (front and rear diffs, trans, transfer) and SP3 oil for the auto transmission. Brakes, front cv axles and wheel bearings have also been replaced during my ownership.

While I love Monteros and Pajeros, I have to sell one. I actually have a 1990 Gen 1 Montero and newer Jeep JL. Not enough time to drive each and wrench among the 3. I have tried to be as detailed as possible with this post, but full disclosure it has not passed VA inspections. The vehicle did pass emissions. The car was registered in DC for my entire ownership and was never a problem. I did have it inspected by Yates Automotive (as shown in Carfax), but it failed due to ‘excessive upper control arm bushings (Passenger Front). I checked it out this weekend and have replacement control arms, but did not see the same play as described. Control arms were retorqued and It shouldn’t have any play as I replaced control arm bushings only 15,000 miles ago. Being a 17 year old car it has the regular amount oxidation in the fender wells. Undercarriage is fine, but the rear wheel wells like to collect dirt and snow there.

Again, the price is $5500 and is fair given is full history. Please if you have any questions about the car don’t hesitate to contact me via email. If the following links don’t work I will email them to you.

Do you have any estimate on MPG you've gotten while driving this? Currently in the market for a second car and this is well within our budget...

400 per tank for all highway trips. 23 gallon tank. = 17.3 mpg. Maybe more with slight increase in tire size to adjust for speedometer correction (Add 4%).

city is about 300 per tank = 13.

I think this exactly what epa estimated at time of sale new. I use regular gas as well.
