2004 Fuso Fg 4X4 on Ebay

Devil's advocate here, but if you knew the reserve price--in essence, the asking price--would you ever want to pay more? If I say I'll sell my Tacoma for $30K, would another person, perhaps one willing, pre-price revelation, to have paid my $40K, still want to do that? I think not.

I'm not arguing that there aren't plenty of items on eBay with unstated reserves for the reasons you state, but once you reveal the reserve price, it becomes more of a "Buy It Now" transaction to my mind. Admittedly, there may be some people who would perhaps pony up the money over the reserve price to try to grab the item. But in the eBay world, they'll be last second, computer-controlled snipe bids that may well take the truck. If I know the reserve price, my snipe bid goes in for, at best, a very modest amount above that reserve. If I don't know the reserve price, that bid, in my ignorance, might be several thousand higher.

And I really don't disagree with anything you said, James. I'm just pointing out that there is, at a minimum, at least one person--me--who wouldn't be willing to bid much over the reserve price once I knew what it was.

Would I want to? ... no.

But would I? ... well it really depends on the item. In this case though, I couldn't say, since I have no concept of the reserve, and weather it's even close to reasonable.

I listed a GPS on ebay recently, and my reserve was half of current retail, and at the end of the auction, I received over current retail for the item from the wining bidder. He could have gotten it for my reserve if nobody else bid on it, but other bidders also saw the value of the item, and at the end of the auction I got more than double what I would have been happy taking for it.

The market will dictate the value of an item above its reserve, but it would be helpful to at least have a base point to estimate build costs for this truck. Who knows, maybe the reserve is many thousands over fair market value... at that point, why would I even bother estimating, or wasting time researching?

Just my $.02 on the matter

Mike,
The truck body was manufactured by Unicell. It's a dry freight model, I believe. http://www.unicell.com/ Don Greene told them not to install a rear rollup door, and where to cut the holes for the door and windows. Don finished out the interior.

Could be that we have an executable deal here that we'll never know about because he hides his reserve price, and eBay hides my Max Bid price. (In thin bidding, the number has not gotten too near the max I have authorized eBay to bid.) So we could have a willing able buyer and a willing able seller who can't figure each other's motivations out.

Truth told, this is likely not the case in this auction, but it very well could be. I'm just sayin'.

30 minutes left, and you guys need to bid it up to my "max bid," or we'll never know...

...

esmi... you outbid me, but I guess nobody hit the seller target!
maybe we'll see a relist.. maybe an update to the for sale page with an asking price?

No auction winner... that's why when you're selling on ebay, it pays to start at least a little bit close to your reserve, then let the auction go from there.

I know that there were some higher bids on there that never showed up.

Someone else beat me out in the final moments. Being second highest doesn't do me any good, and since we didn't make the reserve price being first highest wouldn't have helped either. :sombrero:

I look forward to playing again when relisted.

(Truth told, eBay is sort of a game for something like this. I agree with you that a better sales strategy would be to put an asking price on it and post it here. But, what do I know ???)

Interestingly, I just got phished on this transaction. "SteveR" sent an email to my regular inbox offering to sell it to me for $12.4K, including shipping.

Any ideas how a scammer might have found my email address? It did not go through ebay, so perhaps some enterprising crook cross-referenced me between eBay and here???????

Weird.

EDIT: Text of email to follow:
Hi there,

I noticed that you've recently placed a bid on my 2004 Mitsubishi Fuso FG 4X4 listed on ebay.

Just wanting to know if you are still interested in purchasing it as I am willing to sell it for US $12,400.
I am aware that the amount I'm asking is a lot under the market value but we are in a quite strange situation and have to sell it a.s.a.p. due to some recent financial problems.
Shipping/delivery is included in that price as I almost closed the deal with one of the bidders but he was unable to take the loan from the bank and I've already prepared shipping for him as he was out of state.
So, I was left with an unsold item and with a lot of money already paid to the shipping company.
The transaction will be handled through eBay, of course...

Best regards, Steve

Similar thing happened to me this week, someone hacked into an account where I had put a bid and send me a second chance offer. It looked very legit at first...but then I had some fun emailing the guy back until I reported it to Ebay. Haven't heard since...

Hello Robert,

how I told you in my previous email, I'm a very sick person and I spend almost all my time in the Hospital, so I have no time for meetings. Of course, your idea sounds great for me, but you know, the health is first of all ! I hope that you understand.
So, eBay, like a third part, is only way acceptable for me, to conclude this business !
Or, if you want to avoid the shipping charges, your friend can come and pick it up there is no problem for me. But before you need to make the eBay deposit of the integral van price ($6.560).
In order to start the transaction over eBay I need your buying agreement. Once the transaction is started you have to make the eBay deposit and after that your friend can come here and take it. If you don't agree with the van you will ask eBay to refund your full amount back. I'm asking for these conditions because eBay is a trust and safe marketplace with a safe payment protection and I need to be insured for a on-line transaction. Please no offense but If you are not able to make the eBay deposit then you will not be able to purchase the van eBay purchase protection is the only payment method that I accept for the transaction Sincerely,

Sincerely,
Frederick Fruwirth
