2008 Jeep Wrangler JK8 Build/Adventure Thread

I have owned my 2008 Jeep Wrangler since brand new, picking it up June 2008 from Bill O'Brien Jeep/Chrysler/Dodge in Indianapolis, IN. With about 10 miles on the odometer, it was delivered with the 24S X package and tow group. All loaded up and ready for the move to Maryland:

Overall, I was pleased with what the package had to offer. The only thing I was not a fan of was the street biased Goodyear GSA tires it came stock with. The first mod was a set of Rubicon take off BFG KM1s and a leveling kit.

Following are some pictures running some trails in GWNF:

I ran with this set up for several months, and decided in December 2008 to install self recovery gear in the form of the Rugged Ridge XHD bumper and a Superwinch LP8500 winch:

In the Spring/Summer of 2009, I decided to upgrade the suspension with the Old Man Emu HD kit and also swapped out the stock Moabs with a set of AEV Argent Pintlers. Following are some snapshots with this setup, exploring some trails around the Destin, FL area:

Next upgrades came in the Winter of 2010. I swapped out the Rugged Ridge/Superwinch setup for an ARB Deluxe Bull Bar and Warn M8000 winch. Also installed an AEV snorkel and a Poly Performance rear bumper/tire carrier in preparation for a tire upgrade:

The Jeep went unmodded for the next couple of years, as I was happy with its performance and devoted my funds to paying it off early. In the Spring of 2011, I saw the pictures from EJS of the JK8 conversion kit Mopar was introducing to the market. I have always liked the thought of a Jeep pick up truck, and appreciated the versatility of the UTEs I had used while deployed overseas. Realizing that I never used the rear seats of the Jeep for human cargo, I decided to take the plunge on the kit in the Spring of 2012.

To increase cargo carrying capacity/versatility, I installed a Gobi Stealth rack with the help of the kind folks over at Main Line Overland. Great bunch of cats, and I highly recommend them.

The Jeep earning its keep on my friend's farm.

After five years and almost 100,000 miles (thanks to multiple trips up and down the East Coast), it was time to refresh the suspension setup. After researching multiple options, I decided to go with AEV 3.5" springs paired with a set of OME shocks. The reason I went in this direction was that I already had adjustable trackbars and control arms from JKS installed, and the JKS front/rear trackbar reinforcement brackets would conflict with the trackbar brackets from the AEV kit. I am super stoked in this setup and have put on almost 5000 miles on it since its installation Summer 2014. This included a 3000 mile road/craft beer trip this past September.

Highlights from the trip.

digging the ride (& beer adventures!). Maybe some pics at HF next haha?

I saw your rig via MLO and liked the looks of it. Glad you posted this.

Honestly it's one of the few JK8 conversions I liked - I think the Gobi is what pulls it all together for me.

If you get a chance I'd love to see how you configure your cargo area for gear.

Thanks for the kind words, Matt. HF will be a definite stop on our next trip up there...just ran out of time. Other than San Diego, that region has the highest concentration per capita of beer awesomeness. We did manage to make it to Prohibition Pig....thanks for the recommendation on that!

Honestly, most JK8s that I have seen look like SEMA rejects with all the bling and bro mods they add to them....I can see why the kit gets a bad rap. My goal was just to build something functional that suits my needs. BTW, really dug your first Jeep build....it gave me some great ideas on how I wanted to set up my Jeep. I am glad to see you are back in the Jeep fold!

I will post up pics of the cargo area soon. I have been playing around with this to optimize space. Right now, I have a Tuffy cargo box mounted in the bed. This seems to work for me right now, but want to fabricate a cover/shelf for the rear as well.

glad you made it to Pro Pig - totally understand the time thing. too many amazing places to see/eat/drink!

I think a north to south California brewery trip would be epic. Hmmm. sidebar: VT Overland added a new HF trip for next year

I think you've nailed why most of them don't appeal to me- yours seems super functional & balanced. thank you for the kind words too- definitely feels right to be back in a Jeep. Look forward to seeing more of your build & adventures.

Cheers!

The food at Pro Pig was phenomenal.....plus they had Heady on draft...score!

That would be an epic trip....I would definitely need a trailer to stow all the beer I would pick up. On this last trip through Maine/Vermont, the cab of the Jeep was stacked floor to ceiling with beer. It took some Tetris stacking skills just to get everything to fit.

An HF trip added to VT Overland....nice! Even more motivation to make it up there for the event.

Thanks again for the kind words. The one drawback with the JK8 is the lack of covered storage; similar as to what is experienced with an extended cab pick up truck. However, with the Tuffy security box and the use of the Thule roof top bag and action packers, this drawback was overcome. In fact, it forced me to be a bit more organized and efficient when packing for trips...which is always a good thing.

Thanks rubicon91. The Gobi rack was definitely one of the more functional additions to the rig. It added some much needed storage area. Plus it lust looks cool, too! Lol

I actually have one on order and cannot wait til it comes in. Wife is hating me this holiday season so far haha. Was able to work some deals and got new gears 4.56 and then sold tires and am waiting on new tires/wheels and then have a gobi stealth rack on order. I think I can make it through holidays still married. :) Yours looks awesome as I stated already.

Great Trip report and nice jeep. North Carolina is another beer haven. In particular the Asheville area, but pretty much anywhere in the state you are within striking distance of some great craft brew. We'll be in the Asheville region this weekend and will end our trip with a visit to one of my favorites:

You are going to love the Gobi rack. Its very well built and solid. One thing I would recommend is a set of AEV corner guards to reinforce the rear quarter panels where the rack mounts make contact. Its not necessary, but it does strengthen the area where the rack contacts the body....just for some piece of mind and assurance when the rack is loaded.

Sounds like you have a nice build lined up for your jeep. Your wife will love it once its installed on your rig. Whats the old saying....its easier to ask for forgiveness than it is permission? Haha!

I'm originally from Maine and can attest to how beautiful it is up there, thanks for sharing your trip with us.

This trip was my first time up in the area. It was some beautiful country.....just wish we had more time to explore and travel around the area. Acadia was awesome, as was Bar Harbour (a little touristy, but a nice little town). We are looking forward to planning another trip to the region, and hitting all the areas that we missed.

Thank you for the kind words, jscusmcvet. Asheville is another region that we want to visit, as we have heard that there are some amazing breweries and restaurants down there.

Enjoy your trip and have a safe holiday season!

Cheers!

Haha yeah forgive me now please lol. I was thinking about the aev corners. You are second person to say something about that. I have a guy here close by with a gobi I am gonna look at on corners. He has had it for about 2 yrs. I am excited. Now I am gonna need some sort of rtt but I think that is months away after. Will be fun though to load kayak and canoe and go. Merry Christmas to everyone that is about to read this. Hopefully brown Santa brings you a bunch of exciting items tomorrow!!!
