Lexus announced the 2010 GX460 today. This is the Lexus version of Toyota's Prado/4Runner body-on-frame SUV. Compared to the 2009 GX470, this model is completely new.

Here's proof that the GX460 is designed to go off the pavement

With a little checking, I see that each of the dimensions of the GX460
are within an inch of those of the Land Cruiser 80 series. FYI.

How about a locking rear diff? Is the Multi Terrain Select included with the crawl control?

"How about a locking rear diff"

There's "lock" position associated with low range.
I think this means the center diff can be locked
by the driver. I'm less certain about the rear diff.
There's a "virtual locker" for front and rear diff as
part of Crawl Control.

"Multi Terrain Select" was not mentioned in the
literature from Lexus that I saw this morning.
However, it is mentioned in literature for the
European and Australian models. So I think it's
likely to be present.

I was wondering the same thing about this and the new 4R. Sadly these tarted up Prados will see little off road aside from the overflow parking at a steeplechase. The rear door is a nice touch over the liftgate on the 4R (why oh why did they do away with the tailgate) but you loose what may be the last retracting rear window in US the market

GX460 gets a Don't Buy: Safety Risk warning

Consumer Reports has issued a "Don't Buy: Safety Risk" warning for the 2010 Lexus GX460. Reportedly they thought the stability control didn't kick in soon enough in a trailing throttle oversteer condition. CR says this might lead to a rollover accident.

The magazine tests trailing throttle oversteer by driving into a turn too fast, and then lifting off of the throttle, as an alarmed driver might do. As the driver turns more sharply to attempt to complete the turn, the rear end of the test vehicle swing wides and slides. The electronic stability control program then cuts in to reduce the problem. In the case of the GX460, the ESP didn't catch the slide as quickly as most other vehicles' electronic controls do.

Toyota, maker of the GX460, said it was taking the Consumer Reports alarm seriously, and would conduct its own tests.

CR says the 2010 4Runner, which is in most ways the same vehicle as the GX460, passed the test without a problem.

The CR report is here

I think a bullbar for the Land Cruiser Prado 150 Series (the cousin of the Lexus GX460) is shown on the Toyota Gibraltar Stockholdings Ltd. website. This is the Toyota authorized supplier of vehicles ex-stock to aid agencies and NGOs.

Doesn't look bad at all to my eyes. I like the vehicle.

wow that put a "don't buy" on it. That is a little extreme. I never like Consumer Reports. I don't see how that helps anyone.

I saw video of them showing the body roll this morning on the news. Looks like the same thing any SUV does. Nothing crazy.. especially if you yank the wheel. Shoot they should see what would happen if i had to yank the wheel in our 80 :yikes:
