I noticed that many of today's suv's have lips under the bumper that extended very low to the ground. I wonder if that's to improve aerodynamics and to give a slight bump up on mpg efficiency.

I suppose although I can't imagine it would be much of an improvement given the flying-brick design most of them have. Seems to me it's more likely a fashion trend.

We have to remember that most people who buy 4x4 SUVs brand new rarely intend to take them off road, and that's the market that the manufacturer has to "sell."

Those lips do help gas mileage. It's one of the easiest aerodynamic features that is also effective. Without the lip, the airflow just slams into the crossmember, then hits every rough object on the underside of the vehicle, making a turbulent mess. They can also help cooling by preventing high pressure from building up under the engine bay, which fights against the flow coming into the grill.

A brick can be aerodynamic, as long as the edges are radiused and the transitions are smooth, and you direct the air to places where it doesn't make too much turbulence.

I think the new 4Runner looks great. They did a great job with the square style and more upright windshield. Looks like a shorter front overhang than the 2009.
I think they are pulling it more in line with the rugged suv/luxury of the Land Cruiser.

The 4Runner always has had great offroad credentials. I don't see any reason this wouldn't too. KDSS, Rear locker... it's definitely the most capable 4Runner ever made.

How it takes to modification , time will tell. Seems like a good platform.

I always admired how raw the Jeep has been and kept true to the utter basic 4x4 standard. The 4Runner though, for many years, has been a premium, near luxury SUV- a baby Land Cruiser. I hope the kept it that way and not a baby Sequoia!

Agree with the comments about the low front/air dam for MPG, but I think there is also a liability component.

Remember that bumper heights have come under attack in recent years on trucks/SUVs and the lower the front the better when a truck rear-ends a car.

Regarding the low front bumper: There's an older "teaser" photo of the 4runner without the low bumper.

What I hope that means is that the low bumper may be part of a "trim package" and that the 4runner will also be available with a higher front bumper.

Of course, if the lower front bumper is the standard, it looks like it's made out of plastic so I assume ARB or other companies will quickly come up with a more suitable replacement. And for those who don't want to spend the money, it's nothing that can't be fixed with a Sawzall!

Overall, with the exception of the low bumper, I like it. If it comes with a manually shifted T-case, then I like it even more. :)

The tires - Notice they are running the MT/Rs backwards. Wonder how they perform like when run like that....

I was considering a set, but don't like white letters out. Looks like they decided to run em blackwalls out, even though the directions say that they should be mounted the other way.

The truck - The cut line of the front bumper isn't a horizontal line so it might be difficult to build an aftermarket bumper for it. I'm sure it'll be don't but it just gets more and more expensive to fab and try to follow those lines.
