Autoblog drove the 2014 Grand Cherokee for a week, and came away impressed. The base transmission for 2014 is a ZF 8 speed automatic for 2014. The 8 speed has a lower first gear, giving the standard V6 extra oomph when starting off from a stop. Combined with the available two speed transfer case, the 8 speed provides a crawl ratio of 44:1. That's not rock crawler territory, but it's lower than most large SUVs.
