That not getting any younger comment cracks me up. You and I think a lot alike.

THAT picture above and this is how ALL Tacoma's should come. Manual tcase!...like the not for "US" Hilux is equipped. I suppose they could still offer the electric shift in the Limited model for the flitboys that don't know how to shift one of these and need buttons and dials like their video games they grew up with but it is safe to say us gearheads do not want buttons and dials!

:D

You would think the 4Runner would come with the dial, and the Taco with the manny. IIRC the Lexus had a manual t-case lever for while (maybe still does) doesn't make sense for that target market...believe that crowd even wants va jay-jay warmers.

Wish Toyota would just drop the Tacoma and give us the HiLux.

I've been wondering about that myself. The one advantage to the rain fly is that it gets wet, you take it off and pack away the main tent almost completely dry. Then you can shake out the rain fly and store or dry it separately. If the main tent were water proof and you didn't use the fly then you'd be packing away a wet tent when you closed the Flip Pac. Not sure if that is a good idea or not.

Alternatively I think for modest rain and sprinkles you can treat the main tent to be water repellant enough on its own. I'm thinking your typical desert showers kind of thing. For a NW soaker or a desert thunderstorm you'd need the fly for sure I suspect. I believe Dave of the incredible Flip Pac build sealed his main tent.

Of course if they make it water proof without a fly you could always add an additional fly to address my wet packing concern - so better to have it water proof than not.

Wildernest had waterproof material...though they are getting so old, if happen to find one most likely the water proofing is shot. Saw another member on here in the popup section had an all new tent sew up for his Wildernest, which I thought was a reasonable price. $1100 IIRC.

Saw that Dave waterproofed his, though if I am going to pay $7000 for camper, that should be done at the factory. I don't want to have to get up in the middle of night and toss on a rain fly when/if a freak storm blows in.

Yeah, I'd be very surprised myself. I see nothing to indicate the curb weight would be any lower and I doubt they will raise the GVWR either.

Not a real big deal for me, just have to treat the Tacoma for what it is, a light duty vehicle. Even the Ram Eco Diesel has fairly low payload, surprising close to the Tacoma. That doesn't make sense, why have a torquey little diesel truck with a low payload?

Deplorable
Even with a manual t-case you still have that electric disconnect gizmo on the right side front axle that disconnects to help fuel mileage. If it breaks, and some have, the 4wd still wont work with a manual t-case.

Whoa? Really? Crap!

Nah, seriously, yes….we all know that. And the reality is those electronic front axle disconnects are simple in/out, on/off, 1/0 type solenoids and are pretty darn reliable. Where the problems come in is with the less reliable multiposition encoder motors the entire industry uses to shift the actual shift rails in the transfercase, overcomplicated and sensitive transfercase control modules and several pounds of harness to go wrong not to mention less than desirable software to run it all. Plus, the electric shift is just too slow when working a 4x4 hard off road. Ever been on one of those trails where you shift back and forth from 4hi to 4low 10 times within 50 yards? Electric shift it too slow to react for those type trails and often reject shifts if the vehicle is barely moving, etc. Sure, electric shift works fine for all weather run to Wal-Mart in the snow to grab diapers for the baby but not desirable for real world off-roading. There is not one single manufacturer that builds a solid reliable electric shift transfercase and to make it worse some manufactures such as RAM and Range Rover, seem to think we want electric shift automatic transmissions too. What is this world coming too... Meh! Sometimes, I feel like the oldest 40 year old fart that roams the earth.

This is true. My ADD hasn't failed yet. Neither has the rear locker actuator.

Electronic t-case isn't a deal breaker for me.

Please don't take the manual trans away though.

That is too much work in 50 yards! I'll just shift into a higher gear or 3. :D

Ha, you haven’t spent much time in Canyonlands or deep snow then. That is not always an option to just upshift a transmission

Not much time in Canyonlands...deep snow yes. Deep snow I like 4hi to keep the momentum up.

I don't think I have ever felt the need to go from 4low to 4hi within 50 yards in a hurried motion.

Happens all the time in Canyonlands. You may hit a spot that is technical nasty rocky stuff then a stretch of a sandy two track followed by another major climb or decent and on and on. You can check out my collection of Youtubes from trips past to see what I mean. Everybody in our caravan is in an out of hi and low range constantly to conserve fuel when your 6 hours from the nearest fuel station. Running around in 4 low for hours on end is a good way to waste a lot of fuel and heat the engine up even if you’re cruising around in overdrive in 4low. Snow I agree, but even at that there are still times when we use 4lo often in the mountains.

Makes sense now.

Flitboys- haven't heard that one in a LONG time. It would seem like it should be a given to offer a manual case with a manual transmission. That said, if you can figure out how to work the auto trans shift gate in the Tacoma, you could probably figure out a J-shifter.

#1 reason I see lots of interest in the midsized pickup diesels said to be here soon. Not for cost savings, not because diesel is bad ***, but because you get a big bump in back country range. An idling diesel makes an idling gasser look like a pig regarding fuel burn rates.

Ok, I'll be the dork that gets all giddy about a minor facelift and *probably* powertrain "upgrade." I suspect it's just the current 4Runner powertrain in there with a little tweak to get the MPG up slightly. But I'm liking the new look.

Just ended up selling all of my 4x4's, so in desperate need of a new rig. I'm 99% sure this new Taco will be my new truck. Will have to wait until Monday to take a look at the specs (then a long wait for the arrival). Hopefully the practical side of me doesn't get in the way and get me to buy a discounted '15 Taco.

Not that you would ever buy one but for kicks I would go test drive a Colorado or Canyon, so you have some modern design factors to think through vs what the Tacoma offers. With Nissan arriving to the game after the cards are on the table Nissan Frontier next gen could be really compelling in the whole midsized game.

Last two trucks are Toyotas but after driving the new Colorado Z1 I could see how there is big room for improvement in the Tacoma and Frontier. Im not a GM fan but I liked much of what I saw with the Colorado. I think the step up Canyon would be far better but need to go see one.
