2016 Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero spied - Most likely coming to North America

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
The Triton looks great especially with the black grill and bright blue paint, that I would buy without question. The Sport is only part Triton.

Why do we think this is coming to North America?

Because it's been seen being tested here, and there is a gap in the current lineup as far as something with actual truck prowess and a true 4x4. However, I do see a huge issue with it cannibalizing US sales of the Outlander. The Mitsu bean counters hate that. Honestly, knowing how Mitsu works, they'd be better off releasing the L200/Triton instead, IMO.

I doubt they will, but the Chicken tax IS going away so it's not totally absurd. I would however punch a baby in the face for a Triton over the new Sport, maybe Mitsubishi will remember how awesome they were back in the truck days.

I can't see it cannibalizing the Outlander's sales. The RX didn't stop Lexus from selling GXs.
The difference is the Outlander serves no real purpose and is not considered a great car, so it could happen. But then again if you produced a REAL suv it probably would not since its two completely different animals.

I consider the Outlander and the all aluminum 3.0 MIVEC engine (6B31) a great wagon. For those who haven't met my wife, she runs cars harder than anyone I've seen. By the time our 07 Outlander was coming out of warranty it had 2 repairs in 100k miles both covered by warranty. Seatbelt assy was changed because it made noise when you pulled it, something could have fell in there or dirt but they replaced it anyway. Then one hatch strut leaked, still held the hatch up also replaced for free.

Our new Mirage though, its our first non Japanese Mitsubishi. Seems like a good car so far but it only has 12k miles of very regular 6,000RPM driving so we'll see... I will say even when she's flogging it up hills and around town she still manages around 30mpg. I could only get that out of the Outlander is i was driving it and doing a long highway drive. My personal best hypermile in the Outlander was 34mpg and my so far personal best in the Mirage is 53mpg.

Mitsubishi still knows how to build a great car, they're just clueless when it comes to what and how to sell to Americans.

Lexus sells more cars than Mitsu, and it's a luxury offshoot. If it holds the same number of passengers you can bet the beancounters will be worried about cannibalizing sales.

Absolutely. They were kinda getting on the right track in 2000, but the bad rep from the 0-0-0 sales program came back to bite them in the ***. They've had some great cars, but even then some of the good ones lacked excitement or the right marketing. They're also notoriously late the to game, and are afraid to rock the boat. I wish they would just be willing to let innovations come stateside and let the US in on the global brand. There are so many great cars or versions we never see here. It is still my dream to own a 1999 Legnum VR-4 Type-S with the Recaro interior.

Selling more cars doesn't really make a difference between whether or not sales will be cannibalized. You can look at Toyota's lineup if you want to see the same thing. They're not worried about the 4Runner cannibalizing Highlander sales or vice versa since the average person isn't going to be making a decision between the two.

Yup, it takes a Japanese Samurai founded company to be the only company with the balls to apologize for their WWII actions. *Ahem, Subaru and Ford

I could this move hurting various sales because most of us are too young to know about WWII, all Americans will see is that they were killing US soldiers. Hopefully the other major companies involved in some brutal war efforts will follow so they won't look like the only ones. Subaru changed their name from Nakajima Aircraft Company to Subaru after the war and we all know about Ford's love for the Nazis and sweeping that under the rug.

Actually it does. It's basic economics man. Toyota is a much much larger company with several factories here in the US. Mitsubishi has one. Saying one apple justifies an orange , as in this case, doesn't work. When you're dealing with the added expense of importing and DOT certifying vehicles vs building them here, you look very very carefully at the numbers. I worked for Mitsubishi for 3 years and saw this play out first hand. If they don't feel they will sell enough to make it worth their while they won't import them. Hence why we never got the Lancer Evolution 5 or 6 as was planned. Yes, they were worried it either wouldn't sell well, or would hurt Eclipse and already dwindling 3000GT sales.

This is ridiculous. The war was a long time ago, and forgotten by current generations. Will only hurt sales.........
Thing is Mitusbishi has had no real sales for what, 19years now. Thats a long time out of the market. Only bold, risky moves or major innovations will get you going again. bring something over that the competition does NOT have. Everyone has a Mirage, everyone has an Outlander....In 2005 car makers(other then Mits) realized real 4x4s were no longer made and as manufacturers stepped up to do what no one, or few were doing they were enriched. Same goes for 4dr trucks. Exceptional high performance off-road vehicle are now a trend as well. New models and innovations and what it will take to get back in the market will take billions. Either spend those dollars, or give up.
