2020 Ram 5500 DIY Composite Panel Camper Build Thread

Just a note I have the Sherpa winch and their big air compressor. The compressor has been crap and their customer service sucks beyond belief. If I had to do over again I’d have not purchased their products. Having said that I did recently use the winch to pull a friends 15ton bus out of a muddy mess.

Is there another 25k option? I won't consider their compressors..... I one I am very happy with

Unfortunately I didn’t find an alternative one heavy enough for our rig. We’re 19,500 loaded.

Another thing that has bothered me since i installed it was the flimsy piece of garbage, but of so popular Lagun table mount.

@mk216v you can find enjoyment that the Overland Marketing Machine drove me to this inferior product, and i got sucked in hook line, and sinker.

After confirming with 2 other friends inside their vehicles that my poor opinion of the Lagun was shared by them also, i got motivated to replace it.

I originally had wanted to do the Springfield Pedestal as seen in many builds, but the 12" diameter base seemed like it would be bothersome (I'm a big fat clumsy oaf).

But after checking out my friends new rig with the Springfield, seeing @HAF amazing handywork in person, and sitting at the table with him, it was a non issue and 10x more stable than the Lagun.

It showed up yesterday, and my next video will be covering the new table and the batteries. Probably in a week or so.

This will also allow for the dinette to be very easily converted into a spare bed.

Wasn't cheap, but neither was the Lagun, and the quality/stability difference is night and day

A 16.5k and a good HD snatch block :p
I bought the „Mule“ from Sherpa. Have not put it to use yet, took it apart first to check the quality. Seems to have some serious technical short comings. Sherpas customer service is horrable. Would never ever buy something from them again. My next (rear) winch will be the 20000lbs Samurai from Warrior. Looks like a decent quality product. We shall see…

Me, personally, I’ll always stick with Warn. All I’ve ever had and never once had an issue, nor has anyone that I’ve wheeled with. I’ve taken a couple apart for curiosity reasons and they’re ridiculously easy to work on it needed.

For those that hate big name stuff, check out the Badlands from Harbor Freight. I’m serious. There’s a TON of side by side comparisons with the big names and somehow they stand up to all abuse with almost no fails. It’s kinda crazy. A lot of the “hardcore wheelers / rock crawler” types swear by them. ??‍♂️

Well…

Here it is! 95% built, fully loaded for a week in the backcountry, 74 gallons of fuel, 45 gallons of water, 115 beers and 37 hot pockets

All that’s left to add to the build weight wise is the 2 side under boxes and the gray tank.

So this is very close to final weight -300 or so LBs for the boxes and tank

Honestly a bit less than I was expecting.

I was guessing 17500ish

Nice safety buffer for the 19,500 GVWR ??

Rear winch provision is basically all done and just need to plop one in.

Haven’t done it yet because it’s lower priority as I’m not planning any real back country stuff at the moment.

Still in testing / tweaking phase

Now you got me thinking dammit. Honest question: how many amps will a big ole winch pull? I agree with the rear winch idea for the size of our camping rigs but the cable thickness requirements for that high of an amp load seemed to be eye-watering. Or will you run it off the that big ole Lithium bank to keep the runs short? Amazing work as always.

Not a clue on the amps. Probably a ton. The goal of this build is to not have to worry about that stuff sir. ?

But yea, it will wired to the lithium bank, like the air compressor and everything else.

Truck is 100% separate system. Keep it as it came from factory.

ALL auxiliary everything is wired to lithium bank.

FWIW : sherpa 25k claims 8.9HP, converts roughly 614 amps @12vdc

As it should be! Camper should be completely separate.
