235/85/16 tires...

comparison

for all who might be interested i found a site on the web that does some comparisons of tires. granted individual tires might vary a little bit from this in size, but a good comparison overall.

265/70/R16 (my tacoma stock)
10.43 inches wide
30.60 inches total diameter
7.3 inches sidewall height

265/75/R16 (currently running)
10.43 inches wide
31.64 inches total diameter
7.82 inches sidewall height
speedometer difference 3.407% too slow

235/85/R16 (considering)
9.25 inches wide
31.72 inches total diameter
7.86 inches sidewall height
speedometer difference 3.66% too slow

255/85/R16 (considering)
10.03 inches wide
33.06 inches total diameter
8.53 inches sidewall height
speedometer difference 8.043% too slow

has anyone used the pro-comp all terrain tires? there are a lot of places online (including 4 wheel parts) that are offering buy 3 get 1 free with free shipping on them. makes for a pretty compelling price if they'll hold up.

anyone else considering moving from a 265/75 to a 235/85 or 255/85? would love to hear more about the considerations.

I have. Bottom line is they are the stickiest tires I have ever run when new, but the tread gets very hard as the tire ages. They come with a 50,000 mile warranty and I'm pretty sure they are good for it, but IMO after about 10,000 - 15,000 miles the rubber is too hard for acceptable snow traction and by 25,000 they should be pitched. However, if you live in a warm climate your experience may be very different.

Buy three get one free means you get three first line tires and a blem. In my case I had three tires with little or no corrector weights and on tire with a lot. However, I can't say that I had any problems with the tires beyond the hardening tread. If you get a set, you might consider getting them siped around 15k miles and see if that helps. I was very annoyed with them, but I am starting to think that is a pretty common problem with all brands.

For you guys interested in the OutbackTX1, there is a new website for them

At $210 a rim for my tacoma I'll have to stick with stock.... $210 a rim, can that be right?!?

The price is about right for a forged rim with 3300lbs load capacity. Forged rims are stronger than cast rims.

Fuso FG tire

The Mitsubishi Fuso FG 4x4 medium truck comes with Yokohama Y742S LT 235/85R16 load range E (10 ply rating). Tires in this size and load range are rated for 3000 lbs in single use, 2700 lbs dual.

You'll have no worries using a tire this size on a vehicle with total weight of 6,000 lbs. The Fuso FG is rated for GVWR up to 14,050 lbs. Of course, they use four tires on the rear axle.

A good substitute for the Yokohama tire is the Michelin XPS Traction tire in similar size.

Chip Haven

Hard to know how it will ride - with the extra weight of gear etc. the suspension should do it's job of smoothing the rough. I have BFG AT's load E and could not tell much difference from the factory tires. Of course I don't care about that kind of thing too much, but with the OME suspension my truck rides very nice, even empty.

I am not sure but the stock alloy rims has to be in that range also. Those sure are some snazzy wheels though.

As others have said, the price is actually a little cheaper than I expected for a forged alloy. The stock Taco wheels run around $250 from Toyota (also forged). The nice thing about a forged wheel is that they are virtually indestructable. At 19#'s a piece these are a nice lightweight, relatively affordable alternative for those looking for a new look for their rig. I really like these and am hoping to step up in the next couple of months to get 2 sets. 5 for the 60 plus 3 for the trailer. These wheels coupled with staun inner beadlocks will make a perfect combo for me.

I finally got a new set of tires today! I decided to go with the ever popular BFG AT KO's in 235/85/16. They have a whole whopping 6 miles on them so not much to report but they sure look good! I like the skinnier tire, my truck looks lean and sleek now. Like a cat or a ninja....a ninja cat.

I'll get some up when I can. I can't get to Photobucket off this computer so I can't put up a nice big pic.
