235/85/16 vs 255/85/16 safari tsr vs km2

Ok so I have posted this question before I ever upgraded from stock 235/70

My preference: 235/85/16

So I was stuck for months between these two sizes, only having gone bigger in tires on my previous 4runner I was stuck with the bigger is better mentality.
I finally went and ordered 255/85 km2s when they came in I rushed to the tire shop squeezed them in there and went home. I was already dissatisfied, the tires were way too big.I figured nothing a lift can't fix. So I ordered a two inch body lift they sent me a 1" and I didn't feel like fighting I wanted it on now.

So about a month goes by and I get a job out of state [from louisiana to illinois] take my truck up there and encounter hills and very bendy roads.

Hills:

Truck was weak enough stock, the louisiana roads didn't bother me too much but with the bigger tires up here I was SICK of my truck down shifting for every little hill [I know I could have regeared]

Curves:

Truck handled like CRAP, granted Im running no sway bars, never had a problem till I installed these tires, I suppose the added hight gave the top end more leverage but also one morning on the way to work I took a curve a little too fast [LITTLE too fast] came around the bend and almost went off the road MULTIPLE times.

I dont know the exact terminology for this but it was like I would come around a left hand curve turn the wheel to the right to straigten back out but its still going left so I go MORE right and finally after what feels like forever the truck decides ok now its time to go right, TOOO FAR RIGHT so I steer to the left while the truck continues to go right.

I was oversteering but it felt like the truck would take forever to catch up.

As far as the BFG in specific I hated the look. The section width is 255mm but the actual tread width was 235mm and the side lugs came down way to far on the sidewall. Having owned 285/75 that looked nothing like this it must because of the 85 ratio.

Now on to the Kelly Safari TSR..

I originally wanted Goodyear MT/R but the new kevlars weren't made in this size and the old ones were all sold out.

I saw the duratracs and they were 800$ mounted and balanced, I saw the kelly alternative they looked more agressive deeper and bigger voids and the tread pattern looked better IMO. They were 720 installed.

I ordered the Safari TSR and got them installed yesterday, I immediately took them offroading though some pretty technical terrain. I was impressed, I could only SLIGHTLY tell the difference between the safari and tsr, but all the pros of the tsr outweighed the km2's I loved them so much I ordered a spare!

km2's vs safari tsr's [yes I realize there two totally different tires and two totally different sizes]

Wear: I have no clue how the TSR's wear but honestly at the price I dont think I can go wrong. However I do believe the KM2's would last longer.

Onroad handling: 235 TSR's kick the km2's butt Like night and day

Looks: TSRs look WAY better in 85 ratio than the km2's. The tsr's surprisingly
do NOT look pizza cutter for a 235/85 they are a very wide 235

Offroad: Slight advantage to the km2's. Now in mud the km2's will probably have a bigger advantage but with all the climbing I did with my TSR's they kept up just fine.

Noise: BIG advantage to the Safari TSR's, the km2's were quite loud. Not that I cared because I enjoyed their sound but the TSR's are way quieter [of course there more of an A/T

I really see the TSR's as a cheaper better alternative to the duratracs. They are slightly more aggressive and are more of a hybrid than an all terrain.
If compared to the BFG A/T the tsr's look like they have WAY more traction.

Thank you. I have been seriously considering the KM2 and had not even been aware of the the Safari until now. I am also wanting a 235/85-16 (for a DII) and I like the look of the Safari. I don't do alot of mud, more trail and rocks, but I also like that I can put studs in the Safari for winter ice.

Those TSR's look GREAT... I've never heard of them, but I LOVE what I'm seeing... Great write-up mate, thanks.

Cheers

I agree, I was thinking of going bigger, but you helped me make my decision to stay with 235/85r16's

It sounds more like there's something else going on with your truck. I've got the exact same tires on my 109 (sprung over, LC80 axles and way more power than standard) and it doesn't in any way do the things you describe. These tires have exceptional street handling for a mud tire. What you describe sounds more like knackered suspension bushes.
Is your tire pressure correct and not way to low?

Regarding tire width. Nothing unusual. Just about every radial tire has treadwidth compared to section width, as far as I know at least. Those sidewall lugs are usefull! I really like that aspect of the km2, many other brands don't have that.
