255's and a 4cyl???

I see that the new BFG's MT/KM's are going to be released this fall and I'm thinking about snaggin a set. I'm currently running 265/75's with a 4 cylinder in my 01 Taco. I really like the looks of the 255/85/16. How bad would this size be as far as power with stock gearing?? Regearing is not an option at this point either. I'm willing to give up some power but right now my rig has no problems what so ever pulling up hills on the hwy. Thoughts??

I have felt some power loss on my V6 with stock gearing.....I would think you would really feel the power loss having a 4 cylinder......

In near future....4:88 will be my next step to regain the power......I can't wait to get my 4 low back!!!

I also have the V6 running 255 bighorns. Pretty gutless at highway speeds, cruises comfortable around 65, seems like a big strain above that. Big hills are a joke, haha. I probably wouldn't run them on the I4..

Power is manageable around town, i'm looking forward to my 4.56 being shipped though!

I dunno what 255/85R16 translates to in regular sizes, but I run 33x9.50 with my 22R-E powered pickup. It goes OK, although I run 5.29 gears. With the 30x9.50 tires on stock gears (4.10), it was a pretty tough to drive here and I would imagine 5th would be completely useless (it ain't exactly flat or low elevation here). Your 1st gear will also not be happy trying to get up and going.

I would stick with the size you currently run, as others have said, the 255's are large enough to affect gearing pretty substaintially, and thats with the V6, so I think your 4cyl will not be happy, nor will you be.

Those tires will work great with regearing. I would recommend 5.29's.

From a former I4 owner......Don't do it unless you are re-gearing. you will hate it. your gas mileage will not be the best either. you are actually only gaining an inch or so of clearance from your 265's. better off just raising your suspension travel and continue good mileage....

I love the 255/85 size but have to agree with others here that with a low-power rig they will likely be too much. I'm just barely okay with 255s and 3.73s with a V8 and a nice and low first gear on my 4Runner (still launches well). I would prefer much lower gears but because of the engine and tranny combo it is 'okay'.

I have a set of mounted 265/75R16 A/T tires that I run in place of my 255s. There is a very noticeable gearing difference between the two sets of tires.

Gearing change and 255s (or another taller, heavier size) okay, no gearing change, probably not a good idea for a little 4-cylinder.

I think you are makng the right choice to stay in the 265 size. Besides the great thing about the Expo forum is if you have to use a smaller rubber then the rest of the fellas, no one here will laugh at you! :hehe:
