$299 scratch and dent fridges on ebay

I was aware they were the same, but I wasn't sure what Rob's specific concerns were - that they were using Chinese compressors, that they were scratch and dent etc. etc...
And that thread you reference, I posted a few times in there. I am sure I mentioned that the Whynter is a re-badged Edgestar, but again, buying through S.E. is one small way we can promote our hobby/interest. That's really why I mention buying from them quite often. :)

This scenario with the scratch adn dent units des seem to have yielded less than satisfactory customer service. Whatever company has bought up the Edgestars from Compact Appliance has not continued to follow their lead in keeping customers happy - too bad.

EDIT: And one last comment regardign Sierra Expeditions -- they will work with shipping items up to Canadian customers, something that Compact Appliance won't do. And through amazon.com, there have been and continue to be a number of shipping constraints.
the ebay scratch and dent fridges were sold by compactappliance, or at least from their parent company, livingdirect.com. they used a different account than the compactappliance ebay account, but the order and shipping confirmations came from livingdirect.com

That's weird then...
CA seemed to have much better communication with their customers than what has been reported with the Ebay auctions.
Ah well, that option was never open to me anyways.

i noticed that as well, since i didn't get a delivery confirmation until after i prompted them via email, but i figure that might be due to the sale going through ebay rather than their website. i did get mine (delivered earlier today) via fedex in 3 days out of south carolina, though.

OK, thanks Adam Blaster for the reply :)

I think it boils down to different people working in different groups, even if it's under the purview of the same mothership company. And I also don't think it's totally out of the question that there would even be different customer service policies.

I picked up the Mobicool A40 from Canadian Tire yesterday.

its a shame you had to go that route,, hopefully it'll suit your needs since the summer highs are pretty mild up there.

also, i remember something about that stirling unit,,, like its no longer produced with the coleman badge? it was made by some other company. maybe amazon is selling NOS coleman units from a lost warehouse?

I work in customer service, and BELIEVE ME there can be a huge difference in the level of actual service a customer can receive based on the person you happen to get on the other end of the phone. I have specifically told customers of mine in the past not to deal with "so 'n so" because they are an idiot and if there was anything that could be screwed up with the order, he would do it!

And you're probably right that there is likely one small group of individuals handling these specific sales as all the reports about the Ebay sales have been filled with some sort of mishap or another. All the stories I have heard about people buying direct from Compact Appliance have been quite good minus a few issues with the fridges themselves, but those were quickly handled by CA's customer service department quickly and without hassle.

Yup, same here. Works fine on 120, but the compressor won't run on 12v. Display comes on, but that's it.

The temperature is off by as much as 7 or 8 degrees too.

Folks this is a 12/24V DC compressor inside. The 120V comes in and gets converted to 12VDC. So if it works on AC but doesn't work on DC, there's most likely a loose/disconnected wire somewhere.
I've opened mine up to check out the circuitry, etc. and have looked at all the connections. If you open yours, take pics of the wire connections, and post them, I'll be happy to compare to mine.

If it works on 120 but not on 12V I'd take a look at the wring on your 12v socket

The average car cigerete lighter socket won't be able to supply 8amps for the compressor to kick on.

even though its a 4-5 amp running the compressor will need way more to start up.

You may also have a seperate 12V fuse

Temp- your issue will probably where the units sensor is, and where your measuring, about 4 deg C diference could be quite easy top to bottom in a newly started fridge.

the supplied power wire is only JUST adequate, and the stock vehicle wiring isnt really made for such a draw, run a new dedicated wire from the battery for your fridge.
there is a fuse inside the cig plug for the fridge, make sure its not burnt out.
the soldering job on the control panel was not the greatest after a few dirt roads, i took mine apart and re-soldered, since then i have been very happy with the budget fridge.

Yeah... I dunno. When I've been calling, I did not feel I reached different people specific to these scratch n dents. In fact, normally I was calling the Living Direct sales line, then when the sales person answered, I told them I what I was calling for. 1 of them handled my questions directly, 1 of the them transferred me to customer service. Then a couple of the calls were handled directly by customer service calling or emailing me. I didn't get the impression they had a special department for this. I'm guessing since CA sells so many of these, Edgestar chose them to deal with these refurbished units, and that didn't work out so well.

so, you're calling the sales line, and are suprised when you don't get customer service, or the same "group" every time?

I called the only number available to me. They transferred me to the customer service. I didn't create their "system". I'm just one customer who attempted to work within it.
