The "sphere" is a graphic depiction of the radiation of power from the antenna by your radio when you transmit.

There is no "sphere" of radiated energy from your radio when you receive - just a better designed, more sensitive antenna to pick up the signal being generated by someone else's "sphere" - hence the improved reception, and no receiving "sphere"...:)

thanks for the reply! ok, that helps clear-up things a bit. But, then what makes one antenna better than another in terms of reception? How does gain work on the reception side? If an antenna is rated for 3dB gain, isn't this only referring to output power?
