I love the diversity here. Most people don't care for the vast Nevada outback, but I love it.
The only thing I miss about Chicago is the pizza and my family/friends.

My friend, my story is about the same as yours. 40 years ago the Navy sent me to Fallon from the east coast as my first duty station. I fell in love with Nevada, that vast outback you talk about, and I never wanted to go back. I do, of course, but only for short visits. 40 years of exploring out here and I still have so many places I haven't seen yet. And yes, I'm jealous...I want to keep it unpopulated and wide open to the public as it is now. If I leave my house and drive south, it is 102 miles before I get to the first paved road - and most of the time I can drive that and never meet another vehicle. I just love that aspect of living here. There is just so much beauty in this state that no one realizes.
I don't know where you live - but if at all possible you need to make a quick visit to the same area around Jarbidge in the next couple weeks. The leaves on on those quakies you saw will have turned to yellow, like fingers of golden fire running up all the draws. It is spectacular, every year. Here's a few shots from some of my past visits:
Go for it! I'm sure I'll be seeing you on the trail somewhere. And as I said, I've been exploring out here for many, many years so if there's an area you want to check out, let me know. There's a good chance I've been there.
