...Hmmm, maybe I should have said it was Colorado. I kinda like the "not so many people here" feature of Nevada...

Hurry and change your thread :D

My wife's family has a "ranch" between Wells and Jarbidge that we spend the Labor Day weekend at each year. While I havn't made it up to Jarbidge yet I've fully explored most of the area in the Tabor Creek and Metropolis area. Really hoping to get up to Jarbidge next year and your pics are lighting the fire!

Sa-WEET photos!

First I've seen of one of these in Expo-Mode :)

Yeah, the VehiCROSS is quite a unique little SUV. Its a very capable wheeler, but it has little room inside. I pulled my back seats and with that done, it is just about perfect for me and my wife to go camping with. But, given the rarity and coolness of these vehicles, this trip was officially its "last hardcore trip". She's almost got 100k and I have been back and forth to Moab twice, and all over California and Nevada with it, and now I am going to get some body work done and keep her as my garage queen. Going forward, my Trooper will get built out to be my full time safari rig.

I once read somewhere that Nevada is the most mountainous state in the country.

Yeah, I read that before as well. There are loads of ranges here, and trails everywhere. Lots to see.

Yeah, make sure you do that whole loop. Its gorgeous. Access Jarbidge from the north and then leave Jarbidge going south. Don't miss the Bear Creek and Coon Creek Summit trails. Some awesome view there. And there are tons of trail off shoots to explore and great camping. If I could, I would go home right now, pack up, and go back. But alas, I have to make a living and only get 2 weeks off a year. Such a freakin' crime. :(

Beautiful country. Again, who knew NV was so beautiful and not all desert. Very remote and scenic.

Nah, nothing to see here -- it's all mostly like Vegas. May as well carry on through to California.

The only thing I miss about Chicago is the pizza and my family/friends.

If you haven't already, give Pirate Pizza in Reno a try. (On Peckham, in the shopping center across from the Atlantis.) Granted it's not Edwardo's or Leona's, but it's good in it's own way!

BTW: it's great to see a Vehicross out overland! I still remember the Paris-Dakar win in the late '90s. Saw the four-door prototype (probably at the Chicago Auto Show) and thought "Man, Isuzu's really on to something!" Then, somehow, they only made 5000 of the standard model and quit! Glad to see at least one of them went to someone who'll use it!

Sure thing. I-80 east outta Reno to Elko. From Elko, 225 North to Wild Horse Reservoir. From there, take FR037 and follow the signs north to Jarbidge. From Jarbidge, we traveled south out of town on a dirt road that took us up to Bear Creek Summit and Coon Creek Summit. From there we drove south out of National Forest land and then back up along a dirt road that followed the Bruneau River back up into National Forest Land and eventually dumped out back on FR037 somewhere.

The last two days were spent in and around the Berlin/Icthyosaur State Park in central NV near the town of Gabbs.

Both areas are pretty remote. And the more remote the better! :ylsmoke:

Looks like an awesome trip. Wondering if you had GPS coordinates of the route?

I'll check it out. So far the only pie I can tolerate here is Pizza Plus. They at least have half an idea of how to make a decent crust. Do you live in Reno?

Actually, there are quite a few of us enjoying the heck outta these wicked little PUVs:

I had my GPS with me, and I marked a few cool points of interest, but I did not plot it out. It's really not hard to find your way around this area. Most of the trails are pretty tame and if you have a GPS and a topo map with you you will find everything.

OOPS! Too Late... If all goes well in the next 2 weeks we are planning on moving to the Reno area next February... your pictures make it that much harder to wait and the primary reason for the move. We love the west and the Reno - Nevada area seems to have so much to offer. It will also make a great base camp for exploring more of the west... nothing like a great buzz-kill when you have a 2 day drive from Illinois and knowing you have a 2 day drive to get back home after a trip. 4 days of vacation shot just getting to the start point...

:drool:Love the pictures!

Guys, guys, those pictures are faked and as others have said there is nothing to see here, Nevada is a wasteland. Just keep telling your friends and yourselves that. :wings:

Great pictures, it has been almost ten years since we have made it up to the Jarbidge area. We were going to head that way this last June, but the two weeks of rain forced us south.

I love the diversity here. Most people don't care for the vast Nevada outback, but I love it.

The only thing I miss about Chicago is the pizza and my family/friends. :)

My friend, my story is about the same as yours. 40 years ago the Navy sent me to Fallon from the east coast as my first duty station. I fell in love with Nevada, that vast outback you talk about, and I never wanted to go back. I do, of course, but only for short visits. 40 years of exploring out here and I still have so many places I haven't seen yet. And yes, I'm jealous...I want to keep it unpopulated and wide open to the public as it is now. If I leave my house and drive south, it is 102 miles before I get to the first paved road - and most of the time I can drive that and never meet another vehicle. I just love that aspect of living here. There is just so much beauty in this state that no one realizes.

I don't know where you live - but if at all possible you need to make a quick visit to the same area around Jarbidge in the next couple weeks. The leaves on on those quakies you saw will have turned to yellow, like fingers of golden fire running up all the draws. It is spectacular, every year. Here's a few shots from some of my past visits:

Go for it! I'm sure I'll be seeing you on the trail somewhere. And as I said, I've been exploring out here for many, many years so if there's an area you want to check out, let me know. There's a good chance I've been there.

Yes, but no more mods! She will be 'retired' going forward. I have plans to have it repainted and generally fixed up. I have a new set of headlights and a new hood insert and after the paint job she will be looking brand new again! I will still take her out and wheel, just nothing too hardcore.

Yeah, that is one thing I always hated about living in Chicago. You had to DRIVE REALLY FAR to get ANYWHERE decent. The midwest is sooooo blah. I mean, I miss the 'woods', but still, way to many people live easy of the big river.

We were going to head that way this last June, but the two weeks of rain forced us south.

Tell me about it, Jack! The rain was crazy. I was painting my Trooper in June and the rain was driving me nuts! But, we needed bad so I wasn't complaining.

Great pics and trip report! We came through the Jarbidge area for the first time at the end of July. What a gem! Those stinking crickets were everywhere then to, mostly at the lower elevations though.
