UV-5R, UV-5R+, or UV-82?
It depends on what the intent is. I have 3 units myself.

Then I have a 3rd unit which is the basic handheld ($30) that I give out to others to use when out and about.
I'd also highly recommend getting the programming cable to use with CHIRP software. Makes programming channels and repeaters super easy.

I've converted 5 people to HAM using these little radios. On our last outing we were communicating clearly with 4 miles of separation through rolling hills and valleys, even when I was down in a canyon. I was pretty impressed. Plus FM clarity is far far far better than AM you get with Crappy Band (CB).
