Here's the deal as I understand it. A couple of friends of mine went through a lengthy testing process trying to come up with a nice, light weight roof tent at a great price. For the past year or so, a number of people in my local Land Rover club have been borrowing the test units (there are two sizes). With the tweaking and tuning completed and confirmed design and material details, they ordered 40 or so units, 20 in the Land Rover G4 orange, and 20 in more basic color(s) (I forget if it's blue or green).

Unfortunately the factory that manufactured the tents cut a few corners. When my friends received the tents, they immediately noticed the unanticipated quality issues. Due to this they have decided to offer the tents at blow out prices, but with full disclosure of what you are getting. No warranties are expressed or implied. At best, these tents are considered factory 2nds.

Some issues noticed are as follows:
1.Adjustable ladder is short for some applications, has sharp edges, and latches may fail.
2.The bungie that wraps around the bottom of the cover breaks when tightening, thus allowing wind under the cover while driving.
3. Floor is made of a fiberglass reinforced plastic (used in industrial situations where porous carbon fiber cannot be used, but light weight and strength is necessary.) While very strong, it flexes and users have not been "comfortable" with its integrity. We have not had one break.
4. Rivets may need to be replaced with nuts and bolts.

While all these issues are not true of every one of these tents, they are trying to give full disclosure of what they know.

Are they a great deal? Yes. Are the perfect tents? No. The buyer will want to spend some time going through it, and perhaps filing down rough cut aluminum edges, tweaking the transport cover tie down method, making sure the mechanical fasteners are appropriate, and perhaps adding some length to the ladder if your truck is lifted.

These tents are an affordable way to obtain highly mobile and comfortable overland camping, but buyers should be willing to deal with a bit of tinkering in exchange for the liquidation pricing.

Personally, I have not seen these below spec "production" units first hand, but I have mounted the prototype unit to my own truck and played around with it. I am 6'-7" and 300 lbs, my wife and I fit great in the smaller of the two sizes, and found the tent very comfortable. However, I can't fit the 4 of us (I have two kids), so its not a practical accessory for my family right now. If my situation were different, I would not hesitate to grab one of these inexpensive tents, even knowing that I would have to spend an afternoon doing a bit of detail work on it.

Nathan, are they coming out of the same factory as Mombasa and Camping lab?

I'm sorry, I have no idea. All I know that these discounted tents were [supposed to] built to a custom specification established by Overland Accessories, but I don't know who or where the MFR is, nor do I know the details of what their spec was.

Still a good deal.. If worse came to worse you could easily unload it for what you put into it through local classifieds.. Save a few dollars, and step up to a more trusted, finished tent..
