Heck, 35s were huge. You could be really 'set-up' if you had a Jeep with 31-inch tires. Look how far we've come [or maybe not... ]

Remember when a 35" tire was considered big? I never got past that stage it seems.

I have a set of 44's swampers in my shop that were on my blazer I just sold to a friend. Now that they are off I look at how big they really are. I run 33's and 35's on my jeep. I found that the 35's are great all around tire. I plan on going back up to them after the timber lines wear out..

4wd and Sport Utility was the first 4wd publication I read, in early 1992. Phil is a great editor and solid guy. First class magazine.

Same here, only for me, it was sometime in late 1990 or early 1991.

In the mid/late 1980s Off-Road magazine took an editorial turn for the better (in my view) and published a lot of 'adventure/travel' stories. Moses Ludel was the tech editor, ******** Stansfield (and others) wrote many travel stories, and Rick Sieman was the editor. Off Road was published by Argus Publishers.

******** Stansfield was a big fan of his mostly stock blue FJ40 with an 8274 on the front. He often wrote how it was 'the best' 4x4, comparing it to a Rolex in one story. I remember him writing that it was the last year the truly great 4x4 was imported into the USA, would that make it a 1980 model?

I still have photos copies of a few Stansfield articles, about 8-issues of Off Road from 1987-88, and several early 4WD&SU too. I pulled a couple out to get the names right for this post. The layout, pictures, and ads are really interesting. Time has passed

I have several Off Road Magazines saved as well...exclusively for the Stansfield articles.

Same thoughts on the mag, that's one of the reasons i like it also.
If any of get a chance to run the trail it's fun. Myself and a few others we like going up to Bolivia cut across to the steamshovel trail and out. Then the next time we go the opposite way. There's alot of cool stuff hidden in the Stillwater mtn range.

Now I need to see if I can get my jeep in the jeep freak mag.....
