it isn't often you find a really great thread, but I believe I have found one, I will be following this one for sure. where abouts in the valley are you located? I am up in northern peoria around the 83rd and Happy Valley area, would love to come check out your rig, would love even more to drive my 75 burb to see it but I have a whole mess of electrical issues (P.O left the dash area looking like a plate of spaghetti.) maybe one day we could hit up a trail!

Hey Eagle I am in central phx just north of the airport...
the 67-72chevytrucks.com forum has some great sections for your year rig also along with full color wiring diagrams that would help put that mess back together.
the nice thing about your year is there are even more of them in junkyards & getting parted out on craigs so it might be easier to swap out a clean stock original wiring harness than mess with yours.

I am all about hitting the trail. This will not be a driveway queen that spends all it's time sitting waiting on the next mod. Or worse one that is built but never used. If there is one thing folks can notice looking over my past rigs is that I use the snot out of them :)
The longest this will be down is when I do a engine swap to the 6.2 GM diesel (with a turbo kit) and I plan to have everything ready to go so that will be a quick one.

Oh and my backup rig right now is a 1989 Cherokee (getting it ready to sell for cash to put into this rig) so we are close to rolling the same setup :)

Coincidentally, just yesterday a stock yellow 3-door burb was in line for gas at Costco here. It loooked like it just came off of the showroom floor! I wanted to talk to the guy but had to bail for an appointment. Hopefully I'll run into him again. That era Burb is my favorite. Very enjoyable build, thanks!

My wife just laughed at me when I called and said I was broken down and staying in Yuma to fix it. No worries about finding a shop or dealer.
After I got home 24hrs later than planned I was talking with my son. We talked about mechanical simplicity, having basic knowledge and knowing your resources (like my new buddy Nick and the forums).
Sure my rig is old and not pretty (yet), but it is paid for and I was able to fix it myself. And could have done so deep in Mexico too I bet.
Anyway watch for more soon as I need to get some seats installed, gut the inside and keep having fun as a family.

Woo Hoo!! I am a resource now!! A unique vehicle is cool. Very cool at times, but there is something to be said for being able to buy truck parts at a Circle K. When I build stuff whether it is for me or a customer, I hunt out the most common parts I can. The more common it is/vehicles it fits, the higher the probablility that a store will have it in stock (not be able to get it, but actually have it on the shelf). That also makes the part less expensive. That Mallory ignition stuff was probably high tech when it was installed, but as you found out, you are not going to find parts to fix it in Yuma AZ. The GM HEI that you installed will have parts available at ANY parts house out there.

Glad everything turned out good.

And this is the reason I only own old Chevys and 1stgen Cummins trucks.

This is the reason I combined an old Chevy with a 1st Gen Cummins motor.

when I have some more spending money for gas we should hit up a trail! the only thing about my burb is it is a c10 so no magic stick on the floor :/ one day I will find one that is 4x4. this one is just a tow rig I guess. I will look around for a harness, this one is all sorts of jacked up...

Well Eagle good news for you...
I just put a deposit on a 82 Chevy Suburban with the 6.2L diesel & aftermarket turbo to use as a donor rig for my diesel conversion.
Not sure if the inside wiring will be the same but you will be welcome to any parts I don't need.

Now I just need to find a car hauling trailer so I can get the rig down here to Phoenix from Prescott.

Nice! Good score. Having the donor makes this much easier... well as easy as it's going to get. :D

Cool! You’ll like that!

Bill had an ’88 Suburban 4x4 with a 6.2L and Banks Sidewinder turbo kit. It ran very well, then out of the blue just cruising down the highway one day the crankshaft broke in half. From there the Sub was sold to another friend who sent a fresh 6.5L here for us to install. Once it was done our buddy flew out and drove it back to Detroit. It was a cool Sub. Kinda miss having it around.

I think I still have a new lift pump in the box that I can send you. Let me look around.

I heard the harmonic balancer can be an issue, was it the stock one? there is a company I read about in another build thread on here, they sell an aftermarket HB that is supposed to be loads better than factory...

Well, we know it wasn't the original engine as we found a warranty receipt from the early 90's where it got a new engine under warranty at a GMC dealer in Wyoming. The one that died of a broken crank looked all stock aside from the Banks Sidewinder. It's already been 6 years since that Sub has been through the shop and drove off to its new home in Michigan and the old 6.2L has long been scrapped and has probably been resurrected into a Ford F150 by now. We'll never know why it broke, but it sure bummed Bill out when it did. That 6.2L ran great! :ylsmoke:

No story is complete without pictures! :sombrero: Here is the 6.5L as it was going in. A brand new AM General marine version of the 6.5L with late model C/K truck accessory brackets.

Never got any pictures of the completed engine though for some reason. It was a really cool Sub. Lance is going to dig the 6.2L in his '72. If a person must have a diesel and can't swing a Cummins, the 6.2/6.5L is the second best alternative. To heck with Dirtymax and PowerJokes diesels! Personally, I'll stick with gas in my rigs. Work with diesels everyday....I have no appetite for them in a toy.
