I love everything about this project. I hope you can keep it going! There was an international crewcab listed at worldwide vintage autos a few months back that I wanted soooo bad, but couldn't convince the wife that a 40 year old truck was worth 20 grand. She was probably right, but I'm still disappointed.

Alaskan campers and old trucks are two of my favorite things!

Thanks man!

I learned to love old trucks in rural Wyoming: they’re tough, simple, functional. I love that.

Too bad about the IH, especially if it was rust free.

Next, was another trip to Coonrod’s for a seat, a driver-side fender with gas fill, and some other bits I don’t remember.

4/19:

Took the seat in for its rehab:

Don’t really know why— it was barely broke in...

Next, I needed to get to work on that gas tank, and I figured the first order of business was some wire brushing to see what I had.

Leaks were what I had. That tank hadn’t been used for many years, so I used these to fix it:

Got that done, time to remove the old, failed liner. I used about a gallon of aircraft paint stripper, got this:

I eventually got almost all of the old liner out, except for some I absolutely could not remove from the baffle in the center of the tank. I was concerned it would prevent complete adhesion of the new liner, but in the end, we lined it as it was after exploring all sorts of options for getting the rest of the old stuff out of there. Gotta maintain headway.

Kind of lost headway on this thread...

Next visit to Wheatland, we got some sound deadener installed in the cab, and repaired the cowl rust that is endemic to D-Series IH’s:

The cowl rust:

First, we cut an access hole to clean the leaves & dirt out of that air passage -

Then we used a UV-activated epoxy patching compound to patch the holes in both sides:

Got the engine in, too, after a two-month delay searching for a throwout bearing that would fit. You see, the clutch rebuilder in Denver lost the original, and the newer, foreign-made one they provided wouldn’t fit the clutch fork. Neither would the one I ordered from an IH parts house. We even tried to modify the first one to fit:

The modifications are the unfocused beveled areas in the foreground. We canned that idea after I started thinking WCS, and I started looking again for one that would fit out of the box.

Found it, a NOS one on sale from Rock Auto:

The rest, by contrast, went pretty easily: Harry even had the correct clutch alignment tool on hand -

2/19: found a driver-side fender-fill tank on Binder Planet, bought from really nice guy who happens to be Gary Allen’s tour manager.

The delivery vehicle is in the left background.

I was super excited: I’d cleaned & lined the take-out tank for the M715, and got great results relatively simply, and I had no reason to expect otherwise from this. Little did I know that had almost everything to do with the square (-ish) shape of the Jeep tank.

JJ is the man! Super nice guy and literally has anything IH related you may need. I bought my power steering set up from him.
