80 vs 100?

Well I'm hopefully of a job move from nj to San Fran. If it happens and happens soon. Ill certainly pick it up and drive it back to San Fran. Driving it back to NJ though isn't all that appealing to me. It's a lot of flat and straight between nj and Colorado lol. And it doesn't make sense financially either

Looking forward to having a lot of fun in this truck with the family ( and right now family consist of wife and dog lol)

Deeds been done. Picked up a 98 hundie with hair under 130k miles. Clean as a button too (well bought it sight unseen but have no reason to fear otherwise)
New tires ~ 1500

So I'm a tad over budget but not horribly.

Congrats

Budget....LOL....

BTW, 1500 is a tad too much fo' tires unless you include wheels.

I was rounding and figuring mounting and balancing. I'm actually trying to decide between cooper st maxx and duratracs. The soft sidewalks of a duratrac ar the only thing I'm worried about

Going with a 285/75/16. I'd prefer a 255/85/16 but I think that's too small of a tire on a 8" wheel

Any thoughts?

Look at Toyo Open Country ATII...significantly tougher carcass and sidewall than what GY offers in DT or MT/R.

Oh I gotz thoughts...

I run 285/75/16 Duratracs on my hundy with stock rims and 2" lift, and its a great DD and weekend romp set up. I'm on my 3rd set of Duratracs and recommend the E load vs the C if you air-down and wheel with'm. Duratracs are by far the best on/off road tire if run, and that comes from 30 years of playing in the dirt. C load rating on DTs is very soft so some reason. That said, I run BFG KM2 in 255/85/16 on my FZJ80 and RRC, but on 7" steel rims. When aired down I've not noticed a performance difference between the DT and KM2s. But I think the KM2 are beefier and tad noisier thats all. The 255s would get eaten up in the wheel wells of the hundy pretty quick, the extra width of 285 seem to fill the wells a bit better. In hind sight I shoulda got a 255 for the hundy spare tire well, so not to risk puncture on exits, the 285 hangs down and is exposed bit. I have no run rate with the STMaxx.

The hundy is an amazing truck for the money (in the US), only wish is that it had solid front axle and spring up front for more articulation. But hey its got heated seats... Happi trails!

The KM2's I've had on other vehicles certainly are noisy. That and the fact they wore quickly and have no siping is keeping me away from them.

The toyos just don't look very aggressive. I'm sure they are good but look like they would clog up with mud a little more than the DT's. plus ths DTs are a bit less money. Although thats not a major factor for me in this decision.

I think I'll go with the duratracs with an e rating, and just run them at a higher pressure 45-50lbs for on road. I just wish they were a tad taller. I think a 34" tire is a great size and the 255/85/16 km2's are almost that...

O yea and why do you say a 255 would get tore up?

Go 315/75/16 and do a small 2" lift :D

edit: just realized you bought a hundred, not an eighty. The 315s will still fit, but will require a bit more work than just a 2" lift :(

<snip>

Just wondering, were they KM or KM2's? I ask because the original KM were noisy but the KM2's are supposed to be quieter and smoother. I've had both and the KM2's definitely are smoother on the road than the KM's. It's hard for me to tell if they're quieter because my Disco itself is noisy, a combination of HD engine mounts and a roof rack.

Well this was on a diesel ROW defender... so dont get me wrong the tire noise was certainly not the loudest thing on the truck by any means... but I had switch from 235/85/16 Interco TrXus M/T's to 255/85/16 KM2's. I'm sure they were KM2's b/c they dont make the KM's any more in that size. I went from not noticign any tire noise w/ the TrXus to hearing a constant hum with the the BFG's at anything about 40mph. Now this of course is with the windows down or at least cracked. W/ the windows up you could only hear engine and wind noise.

FOr what its worth... those TrXus were an awesome tire on AND off Road. .... actually, now that i think about it.... maybe I'll go with those
