80 vs 100?

So I know this is has been covered probably 100 times, but i did a search and couldn't find a good thread so I'll start my own.

I just sold my Defender 90 :( It has Amazingly awesome off road capabilities and a diesel motor than can run completely submerged in water (o yea and got great range offroad)..... However its a little light on practicallity and if I'm going to get the wife into this whole overland thing I will probably have a better chance of convincing her in a truck that has AC and a cruising sound level of less than 90 decibals.

So - i"m strongly looking into Land Cruisers. Problem is I'm not sure which one is right for me.

budget is 20k or less, and that includes whatever I kit it out with.

I'm thinking a truck for long weekend camping trips, some trail riding and over night stays, but also long highway trips as well to get to the start of the journey. I'm not looking to rock crawl the thing, but i will take it on moderatly difficult trails (that being said I'm not scared of winching myself out of a jam, i dont need to crawl over/through everythign)

so what are the pro's and cons of the 80s' and 100's from a fundamental standpoint? I know people love the 80's for their solid front axles, but id' still be looking at a ~15yr old truck, most likely with over 150k miles.

You can buy a decent hundie for less than 20K no problem. Comfort wise the Hundie will be hard to beat by the 80. Capability wise the 80 might have the small edge but you said no hard crawling so there you go. The Hundie is just as reliable and as far as fuel efficiancy go its close.. I know the 80 has a cult following for a reason so cant fault it because its well deserved. But the Hundie IMHO is just as good if not better. I think its better.. If convincing your wife and getting her to join in in your adventures is key then the Hundie is a no brainer :coffee:..

I guess I posted too soon. Just found ih8mud.com

I think most my answers lie in that website. I come to notice everything you just said. Appreciate it,

Sorry to hear you got rid of your diesel 90 to appease the wife. We all know how that is.

As far as 80 vs 100 series, I dont think you can go wrong with either. There are some beautiful 100's over in the mud classifieds section right now, already built up and within your budget range.

Good luck, post up what you decide upon getting

Updated your post for you :sombrero:

In all seriousness, the 100 sounds like the ticket for you. I will probably never get mine back from my wife! Ih8mud holds more knowledge than you could possibly imagine. But, I still spend more time on this site.

Yeah, but the thing is, you've got to dig through a lot of fecal matter to get to them.

Cut to the chase - both the 80 and 100 sections on Mud have very well put together FAQ sections. If you can't find the info you want on a landcruiser there, it doesn't exist.

Thanks guys. There was a sweet one for sale that I guess got sold just before I could get in touch with the seller.... Very upsetting but there will be more

Will post up when I snag one for sure

I currently own both a 80 and 100. The 100 (with rear e-locker) is the most reliable and capable truck I've ever owned; that comes from list of 14 trucks over 30 years of wheeling.

Unless you are willing to pour $15K into an 80, a 100 will prove much more reliable.

x10 on "you can't go wrong with either" but the 80 has an edge off-road and the 100 has an edge on-road. Like you said, being able to buy a 2007 vs 1997 has it's own benefits. If you are planning on a lot of mods, there are a lot more aftermarket parts for the 80.

Your wife will like the 100 better. Finding a solid 80 in todays market is not easy anyway. And honestly if moderate wheeling is your target use I would not rule out a 4runner either. Cheaper buy in, better MPG, and the aftermarket support gets better every day.

Thanks - I think an 80 is off the table for now. Now I'm confusing matters more so by considering a 4th gen 4Runner....

The v8 4Runner or GX470 is an awesome machine. Much quicker, better fuel economy, same strength, durability and reliability as the LX470/100-series. They're smaller, but have the same powertrain. Good choice, if you like the size.

Me, I'm driving an LX450 and will for the forseeable future. Thinking about getting a 100/LX470 for my wife though. If I can find a low mileage 2006/07 for the right price, I'd jump at it.
