Ive always heard of this model called a wide body.

No, the fender openings themselves on the 98 wide body style, they remind me a bit of fish gills compared to the 92-97 fenders.

Huh? Which fender openings do you mean? The wheel well openings? Light openings? Or shape of the wider body panels?

Isn't it safe to say that in the USA market, the 1998-2000 Montero's with the "muscular" looking squared off fender buldges are the Gen2.5, and the 91-97 is the Gen2, and 2001 on onward the Gen3?

That's correct and for most of the ROW (the primary markets anyway) they get their Montero's/Pajero's one year earlier.

Not 100% sure if the 97's kept the 4.6 or if they already went to 4.2 ratios. (why I added IIRC at the end of my original post. :ylsmoke

In case nobody can confirm it's possible that the Mitsubishi ASA parts program shows that info. Mitsu ASA is available for Windows PC's (or a windows partition on a Mac). It can be downloaded at mitsubishilinks.com. If you need one, the VIN for a 97SR is JA4MR51R8VJ008392 (there's a repository on 4x4wire's Mitsu forum).

Unfortunately my latest PC at work doesn't have the ASA program installed on it yet.
