A funny thing happened on the way home from Sema

It was absolutely crazy. It sounded like a canon went off in the truck. I was driving down the dirt road trying my best to keep up with Mario, and BAM!!! I couldn't see what happened while driving, so I pulled over to inspect things. The hole was hard to miss. There wasn't a piece of glass larger than a pea left. We think that either a rock came off the tires on the truck, hit the trailer and bounced into the window, or came straight off the trailer tires. Then there is the grassy knoll theory that a local was trying to slow down the "visitors" with a shot across the bow. The wind sock held up pretty well.

Just an interesting note, the rear broken window curse is relatively common here in Oz. In fact it's quite common to see people with cardboard taped to their rear window. Nearly every off road trailer comes with stone deflectors to redirect the rocks to the ground and not the 4WD rear window. Sorry to hear about the broken window.
Cheers,
P

Hhmmm. I should look into something like that. It is rare here. Just wondering if lightning will strike twice, or if I am OK now that I am pre-disastered.

Ponderous.

Paul,

Yep, both of my Ausie trailers were designed to deflect the rocks downward. Note I said "designed to", Towing my Karavan up the same roads out of Toroweap I didn't break my rear window but sure found that my front hitch area on the trailer frame was chocked full of rocks when I got back. I even found a grape size rock sitting on my rear window wiper arm. :Wow1:

Here's the Kamper version with the fabric deflector. That design worked very well.

Here's the Karavan. You can see most front facing surfaces are angled to direct the rocks away from the tow vehicle. The mount for the solar panel is flat though.

Hi Brad,

Beautiful rig you have there. Very nice. I like how they designed the deflection and flaps. Protect your assets, as they say. It must be something about those northern Arizona jumping rocks. A unique phenomenon.

I would have thought the wedge style design of the nose box on my AT Chaser would have the same effect. There are a few forward facing surfaces on there. It only takes one.

cheers,

Hi Ray, it was great to share this trip. It's a wonderful area. To see the Grand Canyon so peaceful, quiet and undisturbed was a unforgettable impression.

Thanks for posting the panos. Nicely done. They give you a real feel for the open expanse of the area.

Now I want to go back there.
