A Swell Time in the Great

My wife Alexia and I snuck off early last Friday morning to go spend some time poking around the San Rafael Swell. Neither of us had spent any time there prior other then buzzing through that cool part of I70 that drops through it from the west.

We solicited some advice from some of the folks in the know on ExPo and thanks to Kurt and a couple of others and their links had a good feeling for what we wanted to do. We were going to start on the south end and work our way north. No rigid itinerary, just wanted to see some cool scenery, relax a bit at camp and unwind. We brought our dog Madi and loaded up the Disco and drove into some STIFF headwinds early Friday morning leaving Evergreen. This was to be the theme for the weekend, wind, wind, dust, and more wind. It became our mission to find some protection from it, but even in what you think would be the most protected place, rogue gusts would blast in without warning and with much force.

I have only the photos uploaded off my phone and a couple of randoms I snapped with my camera. The brunt of the images are going to be coming as I am waiting for Lex to pull them off her D50 still. Anyway, more pictures and less words.

More pics coming, likely better from wife's superior camera and shooting skills....

It his hard to believe that there is that little water in the Muddy Creek...I am waiting for the runoff to kayak the Muddy Creek and the San Rafael.

The Swell is great...It will be a monument one day...

Thanks for the report and pics!

Thanks guys. I keep hearing all of the discussions about the future of the area. Now is a good time to see it before whatever is to come to it occurs. I was surprised by how many people were camping all over the place out there. Definately alot more folks than I was expecting to encounter.

Got the next batch of photos off of the camera. Just need to get them up onto photobucket to share. Will continue tomorrow.

Love the pics. Now, I'm even more anxious to get home, get to work on my car, so I can get out for weekend trips... Of course, just as I finish getting it street legal again, it'll be 100 degrees plus outside!!

Looks like a great trip!

Nice pics!

Can't wait to move out that way... until then... longingly looking at other people's trip reports! :)

Ahem brother....The Clan needs to get out there somewhere before to long. The walls of reality are cloing in a wee bit to close for comfort.

As usual another great trip report and awesome pictures!

But I've got a bone to pick with you, Mr. upcruiser. It was bad enough when your freaking awesome UP posts dragged us up that way, but now you're also running all over the west doing the same thing all over again.

Come to the UP...Come to Colorado...Follow us to Utah... enough with your sorcerous ways already. We'll be out that way next June, including the Swell. Happy now? Your killing my travel account.

I sure hope that it never becomes a monument. I like it just how it is and don't need any government official in Washington telling me or my friends how we may or may not use our own back yards!

Nice story. I hope you had a great time.

It is funny...I agree with the Swell not becoming a National Monument. However, I hope that a place like Cedar Mesa gets more protection (another monument possibly). I base that opinion is that I think there are some many ruins, rock art, and history that needs to be protected down there.

Utah...what a wonderland...

Wow!

Kristian, need to get your wife an account here on ExPo. With adventures like the one's you share, and photo's like hers, she'd be great to have on board this board.

Also, what sorts of things do you pack in the saddle backs on your dog? Does she handle it well? Is it cumbersome for her?

Great shots from Alex. Looks like a fun trip. You're right though..the pics never really capture the wind. I'm not a wind fan.
