A visit to the dark side

i beg the differ. i've only had my D1 a little less than a year but people don't believe its a 95. it has a fantastic shape.

Agreed. The Discovery 1 & 2 are now iconic designs, and the Discovery 3/4 are clean reinterpretations of them.

As I mentioned, the exterior visibility isn't great because the roofline is relatively low so you can't see out as well,.

Parked beside a new one yesterday it became apparent how much window view I really get in the lr3 compared to some other vehicles. My window sill was easily 3-4 inches lower and the upper edge of window was about 3-4 inches higher.

One thing that brought me to buy the 96 Discovery back in 1999 was this same thing, the fantastic view OUT. This is even more pronounced in any of the slightly older land rovers because they were narrower overall such that the window itself is closer to your eye, allowing you to see down and up even better. The lr3 and mk3 range rover are still far better than most other suvs out there now.

This is part of what I do not like at all about LR smashing down the roof line on the Range Rover and on the Discovery "sport" that recently got announced.

This is also why I love the G wagen though. It's basically a better built Discovery 1.

Just a Toyota? The land rover is just a ford then.

I'm not sure what you mean?

A- my comment was that the rental places charge an arm and a leg for an every-day car - it's just a Toyota meaning it's an every-day car; they're on every corner even if they do cost more than their competitors, few though they may be (the Pathfinder comes to mind at about $8K less)

On the other hand, a new LR4 would be nearly double the cost of the 4Runner, so I have to imagine any rental company putting one in service would charge accordingly.

B- you do realize Ford and Land Rover haven't been linked in some time right? They share nothing at this point.

You'll notice I didn't post this on the Toyota side of the board because I wasn't trying to stir up an argument. You may also notice I was quite complimentary to the 4Runner other than a few minor complaints about the styling, the engine harshness/sound, and some other minor issues. But if you want to start a pissing match about it I'll be happy to run on about what a POS it was if that will help you argue more.

Yes, I was somewhat taken aback by this when I got into it. I'm not sure if this was a styling decision, or if it's simply a matter of packaging. When you look at it briefly, you'll notice that the rockers are very high, giving the impression of a very high ground clearance. Then when you look closer you realize there is actually a lot of truck below the rockers. I'm not sure what the actual ground clearance is listed as, but it's considerably lower than what it first appears to be.

The same things sort of happens in reverse with the rear hatch. With it closed you see the part line at the bumper and think that is the lift-over point but when you open it you realize the actual load floor is quite a bit higher and set further in. I suspect this was to make room for the now-obligatory 3rd row seats, so perhaps if you could get one without this you would gain 6-8" here.

I have not measured, and maybe I will, but it seems that too many vehicles now trying to cram in 3rd row seats have way too high a floor and way to low a ceiling, for any sort of enjoyable 3rd row experience. What I want to measure is my friend's 80's Mercedes wagon, a 212 maybe?, which has the rear facing seats. What I want to compare is the floor where feet would be and the seat itself up to the head room /ceiling. I am willing to bet that a lot of these current "modern" vehicles, with all sorts of potential, do not offer much more, if any more, space to the 3rd row person.

Poor 3rd rows that come to mind I've checked out are the bmw x5, audi q7 both of which actually made me fee anxious, trapped, screwed if not let out by someone else. The Mercedes GL is much better in terms of lengthwise room but not a whole lot better vertically. The lr3 is the best out there aside from some big three "full size" suvs or a custom extended G wagon with cargo area turned into executive seating.

The funniest thing I've seen in a while are the 3rd row in an expensive Lexus LX 570 or it's Land Cruiser sister. Those are so goofy for such a pricey vehicle.

I personally don't understand the need for a 3rd row at all for 90% of people anyway. How many people have that many kids?

I grew up in a family of 4. We got by just fine with sedans, a couple of small wagons, and extended cab (not 4-door) pickups.
I don't have kids myself, but my brother has 2. His 'kid haulers' were first an Alfa 164 sedan, then a Jetta sedan, now a Mazda 3 wagon. His truck is an older Ford supercab (2-door extended cab).

Apparently I should be turning him in for some kind of child abuse since he doesn't own a vehicle with 3rd row seats. He must be some sort of magician to get by with only 5 seats for his family of 4!
