The crackheads, meth labs, junkies, gangsters, etc are the things I would be worried about... Im not worried about the cops and suit n tie officials, I can take them lol.

I usually don't go in places, sometimes I do if they look easily accessible/open/etc. But I never force my way in, usually just wander around the outsides. I like to think about what a place might have been like in its prime, or imagine what kind of stories the place could tell.

That looks like it's sitting on the edge of a sinkhole

I went with a guided tour. Not that its legal or anything but he acts as a tour guide at least :)

He tells you right from the start...."Everything we're going to be doing is going to be illegal, but I've spoken with city officials and numerous police explaining what we're doing. They all agree that we're walking around taking photos. We're not vandalizing, spray painting anything or stealing anything, so they agree that they'll turn a blind eye to us."

He did say that if police comes up at any point, we were to let him do the talking. And it was broad daylight on a Sunday morning. Now late at night, forget that, I wouldn't be caught in any of these places after dark!!!!

Very cool. Can you share your contact in Detroit for the tour?

I go to Michigan occasionally on business (typing this from Southfield). I'd love to go see this stuff but no freaking way would I venture on my own...

Link is right in the first paragraph. Tell Jesse that I sent you :) He told me that if you're passing through, and you give him advanced notice, he'll do one on one tours too so you don't have to schedule it around one of his set up tours

Entrance to abandoned mining settlement in Mogollon, NM

House and view from the settlement. I think that's Willow Mountain, Mogollon Baldy, and Black Mountain in the background.

Most buildings from the late 1800s to early-mid 1900s with any type of insulation, flooring, or any materials besides wood or metal will have some asbestos inside. As long as you're not renovating the place or cutting , sanding, drilling, tearing up carpet, etc you shouldn't worry too much. The danger comes from these activities that stir up the silicate fibers which can then be inhaled. Also, most of the damage comes from repeated or heavy exposure.

Generally, you have to worry about activities that stir up dust. If the walls have collapsed because everything is damp, then you're unlikely to stir up any dust unless you moving the material or crawling around in it. With that said, you might want to go ahead and pick up a P100 rated half-face respirator if you're concerned. This is what you need to protect yourself from rodent droppings, silica and asbestos. We use these in abandoned mines that are dry and other areas. Any good hardware store will carry these.

Jim,

I see you're getting some good use out of that RKI 4-gas detector! This is something folks who go into abandoned mines should really think about renting or investing in.
