airsoft pellet tire balancing?

I'll be up for new shoes here in a couple of months and I think I am going to go this route. I hate having my weights fall off, the last one that did hit the inside fender at 80 miles an hour and it sounded like someone shot at me. I had my windows down and it scared the crap out of me.

Now I just have to decide on a tire, I have it down between some Geolanders or some Maxxis Bighorns. It all depends on where I move to next.

Why not use some tape weights? You can tape almost any kind of wheel that would be used offroad. And they wouldnt fall off going 80 mph.

I think the object is to get the weights as far away the rim as possible. I had sticky weights and they still fall off, get them wet then dry, add a little mid or slop and kaching they are off. I started my pellet adding and did my 1st tire wrong, I tried to remove the bead from the rear of the rim. Hoping not to scar the fancy paint job. Well after I got the pellets in I couldn't get it reseated. So I started on my offroad tires Cooper STT 285.75.16, and used the hi-lift on the face and bam it was done it took about an hour could have been faster but my Viair 450c takes a while to inflate from 0-35psi. SO I drove it today and was hesitant at 1st but damn they do work slight wobble at 60 but they were always like that 70 is smooth. I will let you know how the road set go once I run over it and reseat the bead. I used the .12g for the reason the .2 were not available at time of purchase. I bought a box of 18000 pellets at Walmart for $27.

Thank You

Ok so I did a hour long 70+ mph drive and hmmm they are still a little bouncy somtimes at 65 70 and 80. I wasn't super happy but I may need more weight.

I used 13.1oz of weight per wheel, and still have yet to re-seat the Nitto tire of my road set. I will get it done. I do think I might use the .2g pellets for the Nitto's so that I can use less material. Not sure though I have 5oz left of the 12g pellets.

Got some bad death wobble on the way home tonight, not sure if I need to +/- pellets from all the tires.

Well just with my experience working at discount tire and all I think the pellet idea is a bad one. As long as you can clean the wheel good and have someone who knows what they're doing, balance the tire then you are good to go. The weights that we use are VERY sticky and will not come off if the wheel surface is clean. I use them on my steel wheels running 33 MT/Rs.

If you are talking about the weights that tape to the inside of the wheel, I've had the tire spin on the rim while aired down which results in an out of balance situation.

If you are useing the .12 gr pellets, they may be layering up 2 or 3 layers deep in your wheel (not sure how many thousand pellets you have in each tire. These second or third layer pelets may shift when you corner and create an off balance situation. It would be better IMO to go with heavier and fewer pelets.

Sorry you are having problems. Mine are smooth as silk unless I am cornering heavily at aprox 15/20mph the first time I accellerate from a stop in which case they do not balance well. Next stop they rebalance fine. Still thinking about this scenario...

Update.

I've put a tank of gas through the truck since I did the airsoft beads and new tires. I'm very pleased with the .2g beads. The only issue I've run into is if I accellerate through a sharp turn when the beads are initially setting up I get some imbalance (as can be imagined). This is easily reset by slowing down and speeding up again. Under 50mph has been flawless. I've had a slight vibe between 60-70 a couple times. Each has been self correcting as the beads move around.

I've been warned against using the .12 gram beads as it will take so many to get the desired weight that they will stack 2 or 3 deep in your wheel and will shift and cause imbalance. I have not expeienced this first hand but the physics makes sense.

Good luck

Well where the hell was that warning when I did mine? Haha well going out in the dark now to dismount vaccum out and reinstall .2g beads. Ayaya this will be real fun.

Ok I used the extra technical approach to airing down, unseating, removing .12g, reinstalling .2g, and airing up. Since I had no scale I had to use the extra accurate method of guessing. I know .2g container with 2000 pellets = 14.1oz of weight. So I wanted less than before so I can go up if need be. I put almost exactly 3/4 of the container in the tire leaving a bead count up the side of the container of 5. I did this for each tire, emptied the container leaving only 1/4 of the pellets. For extraction I built a high tech reduction hosed shop vac and yes duct tape was involved.
