Alcan Limb Risers?

The last time I drove the Alcan (1974), the conventional wisdom was to put some screen up in front of the windshield on some 2x4's bolted to the front bumper....mainly because most of the highway was gravel. Didn't seem to need it then, but I saw a lot of vehicles with them.

These days the highway is all paved...no need for the screen. But, what about installing limb risers for Alaska? We're going to be going around, from Deadhorse to Homer to home...would risers be useful on a full size PU? We're not planning on a lot of off road but we're not staying on paved road, either.

I suppose I can run them from tabs on the grill guard to Adel clamps on the roof rack. I have the cable and clamps, and can crimp them up without too much trouble with some turnbuckles to tension. Does anyone use pelican hooks or anything for quick-disconnect?

I didn't ever really need them. The few trails I used to get back off the road to camp or fish weren't a problem. My truck is very well pinstriped already. I didn't push it to much though.

Thanks, thats good to know. In looking at the geometry of my brush guard I'd have to install some sort of riser to get the attachment high enough that the cables wouldn't rub on the hood. So, no risers, I guess.

Like fisher said no need but the pin striping from the alders and willows can get thick. Yes the Alcan is paved but it seams like they are always working on it so you will have miles of torn up road and pilot cars. I put a fine metal mesh up to better help my radiator and fog lamps.

If you could find a way to make limb risers work on the side for the brush then you would be set.

So yeah, not likely to need them, yes likely to pinstripe the vehicle offroad.

The tight trails in AK are good use of a limb riser. Probably more so than any other area I have travelled outside of the belly of the globe. It is interesting, but in AK, there are essentially two types of trails. Maintained, which means ideal for your full size or very technical. There is not much in between, as the we conditions can make things a winch-fest.

Thanks... I don't think we'll be doing much technical trail travel, considering I'll be pulling a 5th wheel toy hauler.. but I'm sad/glad Alaska is getting more accommodating to travel, I guess.
