Billy the 4Runner

We were lucky enough to snag this untouched gem in Montana recently and were considering turning it into an overland ready build but we need your help!

This is something we want to build with and along side of you all here on Expedition Portal!

Killer find!!! Looks like a very clean t4r! Saw your post on Instagram and followed the link! Can't wait to see what happens with it! What are the details on it? Year? Motor? Tranny

i'd leave it as is. maybe some BFG ATs. so many better, well used candidates for modifications. You have a rare one there.

Awesome! Subscribed.

My first gen was once rock crawler then turned expo. It would be interesting to see how this build turns out.

Looks like 1985 w/ auto? I was going to say 3.4 with a 5spd and 33's... but i also think it looks great how it is.

I'd say Keep It Simple Stu-... ;)

i.e.: no stealth bomber-style bumpers...would be cool if you could somehow make it a period correct build? Smart, modern guts with a little old-school Ozzie flair?

I'll echo everything everybody is saying...

I've been looking for a clean 84/85 4runner or pickup for a while now. My plan was trd e-locker/arb air locker, 255/85r16's on factory steelies, sliders and bumpers that didn't stick out like a sore thumb.

I'd keep those wheels and don't put anything over 33x10.50 on there.

Although if you are fully committed to turning it into an overland build, which of course is almost equally sweet in my book, I would (if I had plenty of funding :D ) swap the engine/trans out for a 4bt cummins for good torque and increased fuel economy paired with a manual transmission, 4.10/4.88 gears with 33/35" tires, sliders, bumpers, larger/duel fuel tank(s), perhaps with a biodiesel conversion kit for increased versatility?

Very nice! I had one just like that, with a 5 speed. Leaving it stock would be just fine. What expedition would it not be capable of completing in stock form? If you want to sink money into it, maybe an elocker, sliders, ARB bumper, LC Engineering header and exhaust, but I wouldn't lift it or ditch the 4 cyl.

I agree--it'd be a shame to chop that one up or clutter it up with add-ons. How 'bout an ExPo sleeper? Keep the wheels, engine, etc. I do like the way the OME suspension systems transform the way they soak up the bumps and articulate. I would just OME it, add a differential locker or two and a 4:1 or 4.7:1 T-case gearset.

Ah, sorry, I guess you wouldn't OME it, since All-Pro does suspension and all...

Great looking truck--I believe it was posted on here when it was for sale.

Keep the paint like is, 4in lift with some 35in MTR's, dual cases, keep the same painted wheels with internal beadlocks, cage that blends in to the stock interior. Understand its a company rig so you have to show off your products so make your bumpers and racks blend in to the classic look, maybe a roof mount tent.
