AmbuLand build thread

Like you, I prefer the more tucked look ... but be sure you don't lose any winch clearance you might need, if you do that. I tend to prefer a cleaner bumper look, with no (or minimal) bars; but that's personal taste (unless you know you really need the protection, of course) ... weight may also be a consideration there.

I don't think I said it before (and if I did, my apologies), but I do love the profile of the Ambo you picked out ... a bit more svelte looking (yes, I did actually just use that descriptor) than some of the ones with the full sized, squared off boxes. Those almost 'have' to be built up as big as MegAmbo to look right, at least to my eye.

Remind me. Are you going 4x4 on this build? If so you'll have to cut the wings anyway to fit larger tires even if you mount it all the way out. I say cut it down and keep it tight.

Thanks guys

Yes, going with UJOR kit on 35's so I'll happily chop! For the mounts I'll use the stock mounting plates from the original bumper and will do my best to add extra frame mounts. There's hardly no E350 with aftermarket bumpers here so hard to see how Aluminess and the likes mount theirs... If someone has pictures to post that'd be great!

And I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes the "svelte" box shape!

Since I got going with the bumper theme I thought I might as well get some lipstick for it!

It's used, ugly and heavy like some of those girls down dark city lanes but I hear they pull hard ;)

It's got the 5 pins connector so that's a good start. I might give it a face lift and will definitely consider a synthetic line to help with the diet! But again, the price was right ($640us) so I dragged her back home and will do my best to give her a new life...

How will you be mounting to the frame?

This is the only picture I could find of custom mounting brackets. Not sure I'd trust it to support 250lbs of winch/bumper under impact or heavy winching... Anyone else with pictures that could help me building the mounting brackets? Ideally I'd like to add lateral support as well but will need to confirm Chris hangers don't get in the way...

Interesting!

Doesn't seem too beefy, but at the same time that isn't always horrible. The calipers on my tacoma locked wide open on a bridge ending at a red light. Basically I slammed at 35mph into a parked car. At the time I had an Avid bumper which bolts up to the aluminum sub frame. If it wasn't for the built in fail point I am sure I would have twisted the frame and totaled my truck.

I think I need a bigger truck!
Tucked for sure... looks better to me, and for around here in BC, I would go with the full Bull Bar for the protection from branches in the tighter trails, and more importantly, deer. Nice score on the Warn.

Yup, I actually like the look of the full bar on those vans and extra protection can't hurt. My Patrol only has the front grill protector and I've already busted headlights on more than one occasions...

I still have lots of time to figure it out anyway as I'm not touching it until summer time! Got plenty to do with my new seats and re-wiring all the electrical...

I was in charge of my two kids this evening and kinda got distracted playing with them... Turns out Lego blocks worked pretty good at building a mockup for the interior of my AmbuLand! Boys were happy to have dad playing with them, no idea why my wife was rolling her eyes at me ;)

It's not complete but gives a good idea of how I've planned the interior. It's only the rear portion. In front of the dinette passenger's side is the fridge that will be couple feet off the floor for easier use. Behind driver's seat is the electrical cabinet with drop down table to be used by my kids while sitting in the two small seats behind the front swivel driver/passenger seats. These are the kids seats in question:

The cabinet left of kids seat is my 20 gallons water tank with pump, heat exchanger...

Even managed to put some of the overhead cabinets on the driver side wall. (They will be found on each walls). The two brown disks on the countertop are the stove burners...

Not sure it all makes sense but we had a good time (except for my dear wife) :D

Loving the Legos, might have to try that one with my kids. Don't worry my wife acts the same about the van as well. ;)
