Americas 2011 expedition - Need help/advice/opinion

I am planning a trip across the three americas next year with my son, just bough the car for it (Rubicon) and although I'm not new to car travel, this is my first Jeep and the longest of all trips.
There are many items with brand and model options that I don't know which one is better.
So any input from you will be appreciated. This will be kind of a long post and I'm new to forums so I ask for you patience and excuse if it is not on the right place, I have numbered the items to make it easy to reply.

All of the pictures shown here (and many more) can be also seen in a larger format (800pxl) on a page I set up in my server at Options

So lets get started:

1- Tent: Rooftop for sure. Minumim width of 71". Brand are CarTopCamper (130lb $1680), MyWaySerengeti (?lb $2180), AutoHomeOverland (125lb $2600) and EeziAwn 2200T (242lb $2935)

01.jpg

Drawings with the fiting position of all these tents are in the link "options" above.

Things to consider:
1- I like the size of the EeziAwn;
2- I like the price of the CarTopCamper;
3- I am affraid of the quality/durability of the CarTopCamper (it is made in China);
4- I am ready to spent some nights at hotels in rainy situations.

2- Suspension: Do I need reinforced springs? The JK will be very close to its maximum load. I will change the shock absorbers to a Rancho 9000.

08a.jpg

3- Roof rack: Things start to get complicated as the number of variables increase... Flat, Semi-flat or basket type? Fixed or lift & tilt? Top only or cage type?

09.jpg

4- Back Tray: This seems a pretty good idea if you need to carry extra stuff, especially if tent of choice takes all the space in the roof rack. Nice place to put the generator too and avoid flammable vapors inside the car.

10.jpg

5- Sand Tracks: A must have! Besides the old style aluminum, there is also plastic and fiberglass to choose from. ARB even has a folding model made of heavy duty rubber.

11.jpg

6- Snatch Block: Large variety of makers and huge differences in prices. Does it worth to pay for the brand name?

12.jpg

7- Air Jack: The concept is great and as far I could find, there are only this two options. The flat hose on the X-Jack appears to take less space when packed. Which one is better?

13.jpg

8- Winch mount: OK... If it is to change the whole front bumper, the options are in the hundreds.

14.jpg

One of my main concern is to keep the overall weight as low as possible. A full metal front bumper is around 110 lb, I believe its much heavier then the original. I found a mount plate to be an acceptable (not pretty) solution but could not find any review on how good (strong) they are comparing to the whole bumper.

15.jpg

9- Some extra horse power?: I had considered a turbo but I don't want to mess with the warranty on a brand new car. So a performance chip may be a good option to gain some HP and increase mileage. Many makers/models, I am trying to find reviews to chose the best one.

15a.jpg

10- These are cool !!: Information is never too much. The option here is pay a lot for an awesome display or pay the right amount for the data only...

15b.jpg

11- Cooler or Fridge: I must say this one has been taking my sleep... Coolers are way cheaper and a lot lighter then fridges, a good quality one is also quieter and consume less battery. The bad part is they don't freeze and they depend too much on the exterior temperature, leave it on inside the car under the sun and it won't cool at all. As for the fridges, centrifugal or reciprocating compressor? Waeco uses the first, Engel the second and it comes with a heavy price tag, it has an advantage on start current draw. I tried to find witch one is quieter but could not find reliable data. It will run on an auxiliary battery during the day. Noise, weight, consumption, best interior size, form factor...

15d.jpg

While writing this page I came across with the model above. 30 liters capacity, drawer format and "movable" compressor up to 59 inches away from the drawer. Looks the best one! Why I have not seen this one used on any project???

(I compiled a huge list with almost all the fridge/collers models with pictures and data, it is in the "Options" page, link is here.

12- Emergency repair: I will definitely have one of these. Anyone can tell me which one is best, and why?

15e.jpg

13- Electricity: There are many options in this topic too. My idea is to run it at night to recharge AA and D batteries, run the laptop the fridge and recharge the auxiliary battery too. So I wanted the quieter possible, to my surprise Kipor have the lower Db but after reading the users reviews I understood why people pay almost the double for a Honda or Yamaha.

15f.jpg

14- Extra fuel/water: After seeing this, that is not much to say about the old, bulky and heavy Jerry cans.

16.jpg

15- Lights: Also hundreds of options. I liked this one particularly because of the filters that you may add to narrow or wider the beam. The Nbr1 in Brazil is Hella, it this LightForce a good brand?

24.jpg

16- Spare tire: I really don't want to get caught in the middle of Central America or the Atacama desert in the need of second spare tire/wheel. Besides of maybe not having the space for it on the roof rack (because of the tent), I would like to avoid having the extra weight that high, increasing the center of gravity. I've seen these on Land Rovers but did not find any for the JK so I started to develop my own, with extras!.
Now I just need to find someone to make it.

The chambers are to avoid the water from shifting side to side on curves, the equalizing holes to make it possible to fill all the chambers from one opening, comments?

So, this is it. I will apreciate any input that helps me get the best stuff to my trip.

I just have two things to add, I have the Teraflex leveling kit and while it's a little firmer than the stock JK springs, they don't really offer anymore payload capacity. My 2007 Rubi Unlimited sagged horribly with the back loaded and stuff on the roof rack. I'm considering getting the Air-lift bags the go inside the rear springs to add some load capacity. Also I have the Garvin wilderness rack. I do like it but the paint sucks and they don't have alot of add ons for it like fuel can carriers, and I don't like the way it tilts, you have to take the license plate off to tilt it back and still if you go to far, it digs into the stock bumper. Also if it's just you going, look at Kilby's flat floor kit for the unlimited...that is if they are still in business. Makes alot more room.

Some thoughts

Suspension: OME-They offer 3 weight rated springs for front and rear. For the amount of weight you intend to carry they can offer a 2" lift with the addition ofconstant weight ratings. So for the Rear you can get a standard HD spring or one rated for and additonal 300 or 600 lbs. For the front you can get a had or one rated for an additional 90 or 180 lbs. This allows you to maintain a proper ride height and yet carry the extra constant weight. Just remember they are constant weight springs so you need the extra weight before they function properly, othewise you will have geometry problems.
I use them on my JK Unlimited

Rack: I use a Wild Boar with a Wild Boar top, It is hinged

Add a HighLift Jack

Snatch Block: ARB 38.5k

Whinch Mount: Are you keeping your AirBags Active? If So you have only 3 choices. ARB, AEV & Mopar. In th US it isquite common to bypass them...The Potential Liability issues have yet to come out.

Porgrammer: I use Hypertech it works as do the others

Fridge: I have an Engel by Like the Luna

Generator: Honda, I have had 3 and the can be serviced anywhere but rarley do they need it.

Lights: Overland Journal tested these, Hella has the best value

Dual batteries a must
Med Kit a must

And the list never ends

The usual disclaimer: Opinions are like A@#$%holes everyone has one and can be one
Good Luck

It will be my son and I, but I will try to keep the back seats, you never know what you may find asking for a ride... :Wow1:

So if I got you right... Teraflex, good stuff but not to my purpose.
-Garvin wilderness rack, not your best choice.
-Air-lift bags, I honestly would not trust it for such a long and far from civilization trip...

>>Suspension: OME-They offer 3 weight rated springs for front and rear.

That is what I was looking for!!

>>Rack: I use a Wild Boar with a Wild Boar top, It is hinged

Man... there is almost 60 days that I am looking for all kind of acc. and compiling that list and never came to this brand. Just looked at their website and the Den roof top camper is fantastic!!

>>Whinch Mount: Are you keeping your AirBags Active? If So you have only 3 choices. ARB, AEV & Mopar.

Yes, I plan to keep it active. I found a post of a guy who put his winch upside down on the stock bumper, it looks great, almost invisible and did alter a lot and did not mess with the crush cans, I will try to find a ruined front bumper to practice :)

>>Fridge: I have an Engel by Like the Luna

Why did you chose Engel instead of Waeco?

>>And the list never ends

Indeed... :)

>>The usual disclaimer: Opinions are like A@#$%holes

hehe yes, but I did appreciated a lot your reply, thanks!!

Did you see my "Open Invitation" post? Link is here.

added info

Be careful of the 600 lb rated springs. I had a set by mistake with 400lbs of sack feed in the back they still didn't budge. I will find a picture and post it

the engel was part of some existing stuff I purchased, not my first choice they work well just like the other more

If ya'll find yourself in SouthWest Virginia during your trip let me know. we are rural in the mountains we can put you up and drive the area

A chip may not be a good idea if you have to put higher octane fuel in. It's not always available and just adds to the cost.
I would think you could ditch the generator and just add a second battery (which you should do anyway) and inverter.

Im going to have to cast my vote for the MBRP rack. It is modular so you can set it up for anything you want. Right now I have a tent and an awning mounted. It can be half length or full length, and they say it supports up to 1,000lbs.

Here some of my .02 cents

1- Tent: Rooftop for sure. Minumim width of 71". Brand are CarTopCamper (130lb $1680), MyWaySerengeti (?lb $2180), AutoHomeOverland (125lb $2600) and EeziAwn 2200T (242lb $2935)

My vote is AutoHome; I use a Maggiolina for close to 10 years now and just love their quality

2- Suspension: Do I need reinforced springs?

I vote OME, always had good experience with their stuff.

8- Winch mount: OK... If it is to change the whole front bumper, the options are in the hundreds.

I saw the Smittybilt SRC bumper on a JK the other day and it really looked good. I have to say it's probably my favorite.

9- Some extra horse power?: I had considered a turbo but I don't want to mess with the warranty on a brand new car. So a performance chip may be a good option to gain some HP and increase mileage. Many makers/models, I am trying to find reviews to chose the best one.

I have the Jet Stage 1 chip, which does not require the use of premium fuel. The power gain is negligible, but the response of the throttle is defenitely improved. For sure not the best mod I ever made, but still no waste of money either.

I like your bumper design, but I personally would go with just one spare tire and using the other side to carry your fuel. Most people I talked to that went on extended overland trips through Africa, India, Australia, SouthAmerica, were surprised how few tire issues they had. I think more of them sold or bartered the 2nd spare half ways through their trip to make room and lighten up the vehicle than using it as a spare. 5 Good quality tires with sturdy sidewalls, a repair kit and compressor - which anyhow would be near the top of my list - gives you IMHO more bang for the lbs.

2- Suspension: Do I need reinforced springs? The JK will be very close to its maximum load. I will change the shock absorbers to a Rancho 9000.

I usually just read and learn but I'll say something here.

Sounds like you are pretty thorough with your research, so I'll let you read the details, but look into the AEV/Nth Degree "Frequency-Tuned" progressive springs. About $300 for the full set. They might solve your weight management issues, and they run great with the R9000 shocks.

Sounds like an amazing adventure. I always loved back country road trips with my dad.
