Ammo can idea thread

Def some interesting ideas in here. I have a couple ammo cans kicking around here as well...i want to say one is the .50 cal style but is hinged on the long side instead of the narrow end on its lid. And i have one that was used for Mortars i believe...it came in handy for recovery gear when i still had my Trailblazer. I will see if i can find a pic of it in that truck later on.

A 50 cal hinged on the long side is probably a WWII 50 - there's one in the first photo in this thread you can check.

I gave the inner fender ammo can tray a thorough test on the trail last week at Easter Jeep Safari. The can stayed secure and rattle free the entire week, so I'll declare the test passed.

Would the inner fender can tray still work with the rear seat still installed?

Lol ignore my question, just got my answer on page 17:elkgrin:

One thing about if the can poked a little more forward on the TJ, is that the can could serve as an arm rest for the passenger. Just add a little padding the top of the ammo can:jump:

It will be more forward on the TJ; the photos I've posted show the tray on an LJ, where the extra length of the Jeep allows the can to sit further back than it would on the TJ.

Another update on these - I've been talking to a company about these (both the TJ/LJ and the JKU versions), and it looks like both will get to market in the next few months.

During a stop in Beatty, NV the other day I came across a place with loads of ammo cans, this photo only shows part of the guys stock...

Among others, they had a bunch of hard-to-find 60mm cans in really nice shape and they also had PA-19 "tall" 50 cal cans. A regular M2A1 50 cal can is about 7" tall - the PA-19 is about 10" tall. I grabbed one, here's a photo of it next to the "standard" M2A1 50 cal in the back of the Jeep. The taller can should fit nicely in the tray and provide more storage capacity than the regular 50.

That pa19 can I believe is the 48round can for the mk-19. From what I remember it was decided to make 48 round cans because of dimensions and the uniformed weight made it easier to carry and distribute weight in aircraft.

48 rounds goes quick on a weapon that fires 235 to 275 rounds per minute. I loved mine.

Driving across Nebraska today returning from my Moab/Death Valley/Mojave Desert off-road expedition, I stopped at the Heartland Museum of Military Vehicles. They had two original M100 trailers there, both of which have a box on the front that's roughly the same size as a 50 cal ammo can. It's not an ammo can, the top opens differently, but if one wanted to simulate this on a Dinoot m-series (or any other military-style trailer), a WWII 50 cal can with the top hinged on the long edge would make a nice facsimile.

Trying out the PA-19 "tall 50" can I picked up in Nevada two weeks ago in the inner fender tray, it fits very well:

FWIW, these 4 cans share the same width/depth and the same cover fits all. Left to right, M2A1 "standard" 50 cal can, PA-19 "tall 50" can, PA-60 60 mm AN/RVS-14 can, PA-70 60mm can. There's also a PA-124 60mm can that's the same size and even taller (18 1/4") but I don't have one of those (yet).

Earlier in this thread i believe i seen where someone used an ammo can to make a portable power pack of sorts. While i was at a trade show this past weekend that idea got brought up while i was talking with some reps from a shop that sells batteries. I may end up looking more into it in the near future but this is the idea that i have in my head at the moment.

AGM battery
Small battery charger
Blue sea USB plug (or similar)
and a standard lighter socket.

Basically the idea i have in my head is make this a self contained unit that would function similar to booster packs for cars but be there for use to charge electronics, power small equipment such as a 12 v impact gun or air compressor.

Thoughts on this?

Sounds like an excellent idea to me. When on off-road/expedition trips I always carry a spare battery, but a pack ready to go with an AGM battery and various connections would great.

If you go ahead and build one, please keep us updated.

Will do, May even start collecting parts in the near future as budget allows. There is a store up here in canada called Princess Auto that sells surplus stuff like the Ammo cans so i will probably wander over there within the next few days to see what they may have kicking around. The most expensive part of this will be the AGM battery of course but the battery i am looking at is $200 which isn't too bad. It is made by Deka. Of course packaging will get a bit interesting so that may play a part in the battery choice.

I had compiled a while ago a bill of materials (BOM) for such a pack, but using a plastic ammo can. Standard can can easily be used. I stole this from another forum.

Hopefully I get this posted right.

It also includes a light stand idea but it needs a better 12v light spec'd in.

Dang it...ok who was in my head? lol jk that is a great bit of info! I was considering building a scene light out of a cheep tripod from walmart that has removable shoes on it so i could easily swap between the light bar and using it with a camera. Was considering using some LED flood lights i can get cheap at a local truck shop. Will def keep you guys informed when i start on this project.

I picked up a PA-124 ammo can this week... it's the same width/depth as a standard 50 cal can, but about 19" tall. Fits nicely on the TJ side mount...

The PA-124 compared to a 5-gallon Scepter container. They're about the same size so a PA-124 should fit pretty much anywhere a jerry can will.

Here is the original post you made the pars list from. https://badlandsexpeditions.wordpress.com/2016/03/07/remote-lighting-system-and-12vdc-power-supply/
