An Axe - Seriously?

Let's keep this going.

Anyone use tomahawks? I just ordered a Cold Steel Trail Hawk. Pretty cheap and I like that it's lighter and versatile.

I may buy another and leave it in the toolbox.

I have the SOG Fasthawk. Walmart blew them out last Christmas for $20 each. I don't feel bad about throwing it.....

Man that old foot powered grinding wheel is a jewel. Very useful for stuff besides axes as well. The wheel itself looks to be in great shape. Most are chipped up and out of round if youy can find one.

I love it! There are a few chips on the edge, but none big enough to hinder sharpening.

I've had the chance to sharpen a few axes and hatchets with it. Wow! What a difference in the steel, from the old days to 'modern'.

The older ones take and hold an edge great, where the newer 'mass produced'* axes will take an edge, but don't seem to hold it as well.

* I know there are some good axe makers out there still.

Here's my set up on my CJ: Axe, 'D' handle shovel, Hi-Lift, Chain saw and 5 Gal Gerry can.

After all my years of camping, I've never used or needed an AX-

^^^^^ now that is a very different stroke. You only camp in places that sell you wood precut in boxes?:REOutCampFire03:

Exactly. As JIMBO can tell you in NORCAL, firewood comes in plastic net bags from SAFEWAY.

:sombrero: I'm sure you can buy wood already cut, but

Camping ONLY IN THE SIERRAs--(Pine Trees), there's always "CORDS" of dry firewood and dumptrucks full of dead branch/kindling--

Now for you Explorers that camp in "OTHER" states/forests/deserts--I'm sure it's hard for you to understand my NON-USE of an AX-

Check out Gransfors Bruks at http://www.gransfors.com/htm_eng/index.html. Their splitting mauls are excellent, and all of their axes are razor sharp. These beat anything you will find in any hardware or home improvement or big box outdoor store.

Some garb on my GBA Small Forest. I love this thing, its chopped far bigger wood than it probably should have.

We will be visiting their Forge in Sweden next February :) yessss!

Well havn´t read through all posts. But I have an axe in my daly driver. Why? We´ll I´m living in Sweden. Just have a look at the map at our latitude and our population density. The main purpose is not clearing the road but the probability of hitting wild game with the car. Since it´s probably gonna be a long way to the nearest house and even a longer way to the nearest gun (we don´t carry guns in our cars if your not going hunting). An axe might the best way of ending the suffering of a injured animal. Have had to do that twice with a dear and a reindeer. (Not chopping the head off! Just hitting it with the blunt side.)

^^^ I have to say that is one of the most interesting 'first' post I have ever read. First things first, Welcome!

Second thing, hmmmm interesting that in your country most will not carry a firearm in cars but will carry a gruesome instrument of death in the form of a bludgeoning axe.

Thanx! I´ll have to say that I´ve been lurking around the forum for some time without contributing. I would say that it´s not probably common to have an axe in the car. Probably much more common to have a shovel in your daily driver (we have long winter). But we have strict gunlaws so I know for sure it´s not common to have an gun in the car. And I´ve been spending alot of time driving through the big woods in the northern part of Sweden. So my lesson learned is to have an axe (I´m not a hunter and I think it´s the best way, to my knowledge, for me to end a injured animals suffering) in the car.
