An Axe - Seriously?

I carry an axe in my jeep. it has gotten me out of lots of situations and made a ton of firewood for my crew on many a jeep outings. Easily the most loved and used tool in the convoy. douples as a hammer too. Completely worth it. The bow saw i carry gets less workout than the Axe but again 100% worth having every outing.

I just ordered an axe myself.

Husqvarna Traditional Axe. 2lb head, 25" length. Hopefully will get it on Tuesday. Now gotta find some stuff to cut down.

Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining.
For anyone looking, I couldn't find this Axe in my area when I was looking, but found out it is made for Stihl by Gedore Ochsenkopf, at least I'm 99% sure it's the same one and that one is available in Canada at a few retailers. Just thought I'd pass it along.

This was spotted at a local small engine repair shop. Too beautiful to pass up!

The big outdoor/sporting goods store on Main Av in Durango has all kinds of axes. A great display on the wall; I have to wonder if they ever sell any...

An Axe - Seriously?

In my relatively short time as a part of this community, I have seen a number of posts and pictures where someone has an axe mounted next to their shovel or hi-lift. To be honest - what for?

I have spent plenty of time in the woods using a chainsaw, bow saw, hatchet, folding saw, or a splitting maul - but never once found myself thinking, "wow, an axe would be really handy". Sure, an axe has it's place - but I just don't think it's a necessary part of the overlander's toolkit. A bowsaw is smaller, lighter, and (I think) more practical when it comes to overland travel. Maybe it's just me, but it seems to be more for the "expedition bling" factor than anything else...

Seriously, what is everyone using there axe for? I carry a bowsaw for clearing trail obstructions and the occasional instance where I might need to collect some wood for a fire. I don't really see why an axe would be a better choice when you factor in the size, weight, and mounting complexity. Maybe you guys are having lumberjack competitions around camp each night??

Am I wrong? Someone enlighten me.

This is the first post. I went allllllll the way through this thread. So JM, I don't leave home in my Land Cruiser without one. Ever. I usually have 2, but I've been using one since I was
a kid. Most useful tool I have, cut wood, cut food, build shelter. Old school rules I guess. J

I have not taken my axe for a few years now.16 inch chain saw, splitting maul and a razor sharp hatchet. The wood around here is to big for an axe.

Just habit I guess, I always carry and axe and a shovel.

Neither gets a lot of use but that axe will never run out of gas and I can get through a pretty big chunk of wood if I had to. It gets put up top, so it is out of the way.

And generally if I am a long way from nowhere, I would rather chop wood than run a chainsaw - but that is very much a personal choice.

I think I use the butt of my ax for hammering things more than using the blade for chopping things. But if the chainsaw or bowsaw ever go down, it feels good to have that old rusty ax back there on the truck.

Oh no, that would be dangerous. That's why I usually hand it to my copilot and point, "Hammer here." :) But in a all seriousness, sometimes your regular hammer just isn't enough and nobody carries a sledgehammer around, so that's what they made the butt of the ax for. If I am incorrect, someone please let me know.
