An Axe - Seriously?

Do this test. Walk down the street carrying a bow saw and then try it with an axe. I'm betting the axe gets a lot more attention :)

A couple of years ago I needed to get my Max Axe sharpened. This is a yellow handle axe with bright red head on it. I searched for a shop via my phone, called and confirmed they can do axes, and then told my phone to plot the route and away I went. It wasn't until l got into the parking lot that I realized my problem...... it was a knife shop in a major mall in Southern California.

So in answer to the age old question:
"How do you carry an axe through a crowded mall?"
..... you do it quickly, holding axe by the neck, head down, with the handle tucked up between your arm and your body, and walk as caviellerly and nonchalantly as possible :-)

Hell, I'd've just done it Paul Bunyan style:

Anyone says anything, tell 'em you're looking for that cheatin' wife of yours.

For a serious turn, and speaking as someone who's had to carry large bladed weapons such as swords and battle axes though crowded public areas where such things are not common, wrapping such things in a blanket and tied off with rope really helps put minds at ease, especially with the cops. Even better if you have some sort of sheath or protective cover for the ax blade on it as well.

I gotta ask, why did you need to take an axe somewhere to get it sharpened?

A bit late to the game, but it has been my understanding that to be on NF land, you're required to carry at a minimum xx gallons of water, a full sized spade, and an axe. Perhaps this is an old requirement. Has anyone else heard this?

I worked for the Forest Service in the early 90s. I never heard of that even from the old salts that had been there in the 80s. Maybe back prior to that? Back when people took responsibilty for their own actions and didn't go around blaming the world for everything. The FS is so politically correct these days they would never, ever ask any member of the public to have tools available to... "Gasp".. fight a fire or do any other kind of work, wouldn't want them to get injured and sue you know.

Oh of course. I was better prepared when I went back to pick it up a few days later. I tied it up in a large bag. The humor (for me) of the story was that initial chagrin I felt when I belatedly realized that the store was in a mall.

I walked to the store to buy a maul a month ago and, while on the way home, stopped for some groceries. I got a couple looks, but mostly just got into several conversations with old timers about chopping wood.

Turns out that it was OR DoF and only applies during regulated use fire season. See previous posts. Not sure about other states.

So a lady goes into the Pharmacist and asks him for some arsenic to poison her husband. Aghast, the Pharmacist denies her request. She then shows him a picture of her husband meeting his wife at a cheap motel.

The Pharmacist says "I apologize! I did not realize that you had a prescription!"

A file and vice is all you need. I never use a grinder on my hand tools.

Okay experts. I was taught a file is one way only, never drag it backwards. Agree or disagree?

Agree. But a flap disk works great on an axe... (ok im lazy)

Right. Overheating the material can and will change the temper.

Right again. In fact, putting pressure on the backstroke can flatten out the teeth and ruin the file.
