I feel and understand the pain. It's hard to tell people who are just surviving that they are destroying the future. They don't understand or don't want to understand since again, they are just surviving and feeding their family... most, but not all. I often feel the same here in the US when you see properties that have sat vacant for so long and deteriorated to the point that they are no longer habitable, but instead of recycling these properties, we go clear more land, to build a new property, further expanding our footprint outward.

I am considering upgrading from the white gas stove you show in this photo (which has served me well for 10+ years) to a propane model. Primarily, this is for speed and convenience.

What is has your experience been finding fuel for your stove while traveling, and what, if any, thoughts do you have about propane?

And to Wes. I use my old Coleman multi-fuel with a propane adapter. I burns hot but works well on small bottles and 20# tanks. I can switch between liquid fuels and propane at any time. Sometimes I get enticed by a smaller, slimmer, lighter new propane only stove...then I remind myself to keep it simple and make the best of what I have, especially because it still works great!

Thank you for this write-up. Your adventures is putting the itch to do a similar journey with my Land Rover. Safe travels and maybe we'll cross paths one day.

As for coffee, look for a 'moka pot' and you'll have the best stove-top percolator around!

Curious what form of fuel is easiest to find in South America? I read from a lot of people that it's propane, but here I see liquid fuel in use. Coen?

We have been using gasoline from the service stations across Asia and South America for the last ten years. Available everywhere. I just mix in a bit of injector cleaner every once in a while to keep the clogging of the generator to a minimum. If things seem to get clogged, I unscrew the whole generator and clean it with brake cleaner and a .22 gun cleaning kit. I do have a spare generator to swap.

As for propane or butane, I wouldn't have a clue. I think for us it would be a space problem fitting that bottle somewhere. And I might think it would have altitude problems? Maybe freezing up the nozzle?
