F150 is a good starting point! Like any full size the trails are a little tighter and its not a rock crawler. Mine is the SuperCrew and the Supercab is my fathers...

^ nice trucks! always thought a slide would go with the F-150, realization is that RTT or trailer or both is the way to go. So, Wolvee where did ya go? :)

Very little build needed for an F150 unless you're doing serious rock crawling. Wherever you're "overlanding" the locals have been driving stock F150s since they've existed.

In any essence, the regular cab is bone stock with a shell ATC that is bolted on 24/7. The screw is mine with the same aftermarket sway bar and Firestone airbags as the 3/4 ton guys. It's my daily driver but makes neat work of 5 rated trails in Colorado with the camper on.

Ismael and Bayou Boy, nice rigs! Like the rack on the topper.

Bayou, did the bags allow you to go with that camper, always thought they were too heavy for the F-150, and loaded for a weekend? I usually take stuff and gone for several days or a week, I'm loaded with the GF. LOL

The rig is over GVWR but I'd bet 75% of the rigs here are, even the ones just loaded for a tent camping trip. Anyway, it ran fine over 4500 miles from Louisiana to wyoming and through colorado on the way back. Probably 200-250 miles of FS roads with 50-60 of that in 4low and thousands of miles of highway up to and a little over 80mph at times. Would a 3/4 ton truck have been better for the job, sure. Was it necessary, no. Was this way more comfy than a stiff 3/4 ton, absolutely. Would I rather drive this everyday, hands down.

Everyone you talk to has no clue. Is there really any difference CG wise between a 4000# 11ft camper on an 8ft bed and this 1200# 8ft camper on my 5.75ft bed? Not really. I'd venture to say that my rig handles better than that one ton with the hard side by a very large margin. I had to build a little 4x8 frame of 2x4s to set under the camper as it wasn't made for the deep ford beds. If you decide to go this route, shoot me a PM and I can put a thread up on securing a camper onto these trucks easily and unobtrusively using the stock bed bolts in the front and big eye bolts for the rear.

See this thread for a couple of more pics.

Btw, in that pic, I'm loaded for two weeks camping and flyfishing. A few days later I picked up my son and wife for a week camping and had all of their crap too.

Bayou, yes, my dad says my truck rides like his Caddy on the road. It has the "off road-trailer package" what ever that is, no idea what the real difference is to stock, but it does ride nicely. I can go camping as an ultra light if I had to, don't want to. I'd rather have the motorhome amenities, big screen, double fridge, oven and 4 burner, micro, washer and dryer, Jacuzzi tub and king bed, but for the $$$,$$$ difference, I know how to find nicer motels with a pool and room service!

I just don't want to suffer, on or off road where many hours can pass under what can be stressful conditions at times or bored.

I think the F-150 is a great compromise between the smaller SUVs and larger vehicles, although I keep looking at those box delivery jobs, but then remember they are slower, louder, harder ride, tuff in parking lots and tighter spaces and would hate to change those tires while paying more at the pump. So, no washer and dryer I guess. :)
