That's the tricky one, because you can jerk the wheel quicker than you can get to the brake. But like you said, there is often a high risk of causing a serious accident that didn't need to happen, too. And if that occurs, you'll be at fault. So that has never been my "go to", even with cars that I know could swerve way better than my truck + camper. Brakes first, a fraction of a second assessment, and then let off the brake and swerve if that seems best.As several have said, swerving in an emergency should be a last resort option and hard braking should always be the default.
