Anyone have input on impact drivers?

I have the 18v 300 ft/lb DeWalt - it isn't small, but it is very effective. I'm quite surprised what it can get done. With two batteries you could take apart the truck :sombrero:

If you do go electric, then I would strongly suggest something battery-powered with a variable-speed trigger. That's why I went with my Milwaukee. The variable speed is nice for things like lug nuts so that you can baby them on until your seated and ready to be torqued, but you've still got plenty of power even though you're running slow. That was the biggie for me, and I'm very happy. This is what I got...

I don't have much to add, other than my $60 Harbor Freight AC-powered impact driver has saved me more time and busted knuckles than I care to think about.

If the basic question here is "should I get an impact driver", my answer is an emphatic "yes". DeWalt seems to be a good brand, I don't think you can go wrong.

If you have tons of room and weight to spare then why not go with an impact I guess.
I try to keep my rig well enough maintained that trail repairs arent necessary. Of couse, we all know things happen though. I carry a 1/2" drive x 18" long breaker bar. I also carry an 18" piece of pipe with one end ovaled out to fit over combination wrenches, as well as another 3ft long piece of pipe. They take up basically no space b/c they fit in areas that nothing would fit in anyways. And they double as a self defense tool.
I have a nice Chicago Pneumatic CP 734 air impact at home. Picked it up off CL for $15.
Even if I had on board air I doubt I'd bring it. I don't really plan on rotating tires on the trail.

I think the cordless stuff solves the weight problem pretty handily. And most manufacturers have an auto plug charger that can charge while you are using the first battery if you are really broken.
