Not that I'm aware of...other than sometime ago he stated (paraphrasing) O.N. was going to be PC only with no Mac compatible mapping for the foreseeable future...

Maybe we need a survey vote to see how many would be interested in an Overland Navigator Topo app for iPad (assuming he doesn't have one in the pipeline...)!

Almost perfect package ...

For me the iPad is almost a perfect package.

- great screen size
- good viewing angle
- robust enough (fell from the RTT twice and survived)
- a lot of different apps (swiss knife or multi-tool for everyday life)
- and a battery life that would put my kids to shame ...
- Wifi, 3G, Blue tooth
- will play almost any kind of media

It is not perfect but the closest thing to that I have come across. When mounted with a Ram Mount the thing just come to life.

Here is a pict of it mounted in my D110.

Enjoy !

Pat

If you're interested in using the iPad for writing, consider giving information Archetects new program, Writer, a try. It's designed specifically to make writing on the iPad more productive. Among the features: An additional row of on-screen keys that adds arrow keys for accurate cursor movement, and a typeface that's clear and easy to read. And the program does away with word auto-correct -- hooray!

iA Writer works with the Dropbox program to save and sync your work with a server in the Internet "cloud;" there's no need to use iTunes to transfer files.

The company web page about iA Writer is here http://www.informationarchitects.jp/en/writer-for-ipad/

iA Writer costs $5 through iTunes. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ia-writer/id392502056

We got some through work yesterday and have had some time to play with them and already found out a few things.

On the 3g 16g
With the camera connection kit you can:
Plug in a usb keyboard. It says "device not supported" but it still works
Plug in a usb mic and use skype. Again it says "device not supported" but works

With the 16g wireless you can:
Do all the above, as well as jail break it very easy. Then jailbreak your iphone and use myfi to tether your ipad. (worked great)
Jailbreak your ipad and use http://www.roqy-bluetooth.net/wp/ to connect a bluetooth GPS puck.

We have not tried to use a usb GPS with the camera connection kit because we couldn't find a usb GPS lying around the office....Some one else may try it and weigh in.:sombrero:

Now to figure out how to built a car mount so I can use the topo maps....

awesome work about the keyboard preacherman! thats great news!

The ipad has a built in microphone that was pretty good to me - i wonder what other usb attachments you can get away with?

I wonder if I should jailbreak my ipad for the trip? The waterproof case came for my ipad hurray! I get rained on a lot.

Thanks for the link haven! I think I am going to buy that writing program tonight for the trip! I kinda sorta write for a living so I'll need that for sure.

Hey guys, anyone had this proclip mount on their jeep dash? Mine just popped off with the ipad while driving in NYC streets! That doesnt bode well for offroad.

Did I mount it wrong? Luckily the ipad fell into the seat!

Any indication that ipad will backup to mobile me? Needing a sync to back up is limiting when traveling.

Yes it does. When you set up the email accounts it is one of 5 or 6 options. Mine is set up through ms office. It also works well with google docs and today I started using a program similar to ms one note.

The folks at iFixit have disassembled and photographed the
interior of the new second generation Apple TV. The $99
device is built a lot like an iPad on the inside.

http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Apple-TV-2nd-Generation-Teardown/3625/1

This bodes well for hardware hacking. I can imagine a modified
Apple TV running iOS 4.2, embedded in a vehicle dashboard
and connected to an LCD monitor.

Edit: Here's an article from Gizmodo that talks about ways the
Apple TV could be modified to send and receive video content
with the iPad.

Group participant Telwyn first introduced us to Line2, a Voice-over-IP app that works on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. You pay Line2 a monthly fee, and they provide you with a telephone number that uses WiFi to connect.
http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=608951&postcount=270

Now Toktomi (get it?), the company that makes Line2, has released an upgrade. In addition to bug fixes, the new version has several cool features. You can send and receive text messages sent via the Line2 number. And once iPad gets upgraded to iOS 4.2, your iPad will ring when a call is coming in even if you don't have the Line2 app open (multitasking at its finest). If you don't answer a call, it goes to voice mail.

Also noteworthy: The monthly charge has been dropped from $15 to $10 a month. Calls and texts are free of additional charge to any number in USA and Canada. If you're overseas, Line2 calls back to USA are free, too.
I've read reports that Line2 works with your Google Voice phone number.

Here's a page with a movie that describes Line2 using the iPad's built in mic and speaker http://www.line2.com/ipod_ipad.aspx

And here's a page that compares Line2 with Skype, Fring and other VOIP services http://www.line2.com/see_how_we_compare.aspx

You can try Line2 for free for 30 days, after which the charge is $10 a month.

almost time for my trip.

Here is what I have to do tonight.

root android g2 and try to wifi tether it to ipad! then try to get a good mount with the ipad on the dash.

Finish in dash mp3 player headunit with aux input for CB and Ipad audio (maybe even android!)

downside on ipad, default video size from HERO HD camera cant be played on Ipad. Ill see if the lower res version works. if not - there goes my hope for intrip video editing with ipad.

Verizon Wireless and AT&T will become the first cell phone carriers to offer the iPad. Sales are expected to start on October 28th. Until then, you have to purchase the iPad through Apple, Best Buy, Amazon.com, Target, or Wal-Mart, and then make separate arrangements for 3G wireless data service.

The data modem built into the iPad 3G works with AT&T's network, and not with Verizon. Verizon will market the standard iPad (no 3G) plus a Verizon MiFi mobile hotspot.

So far, all the retailers are using Apple's pricing for the iPad. As the holiday shopping season kicks off, I expect retailers to bundle iPads with other devices or services to achieve a lower price without violating Apple's price policy.

I never liked the NY Times Editors Choice app for iPad. The selection of content was very limited. So I connect to the newspaper via the Safari web browser instead.

This may change with version 2.0 of the app, which advertises full access to all parts of the paper, and several blogs kept by NY Times editors. The app is free if you download before 2011. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/nytimes-for-ipad/id357066198
