Apple Tablet: iPad

dzzz

Looks like Audodesk is headed for iOS

I didn't see that one coming. Auodesk?

Having helped my Dad use his new iPad several times now I'm very impressed and feel I'm seeing a new era in technology. It's an obvious choice for older people who tend to have computer problems and just need email and web.

It's just about impossible to break the software with the underline code being so abstracted by the UI. Apple needs to keep iOS simple and not become tablet OSX.

The iPod touch seems to be designed for kids whose parent won't buy them an iPhone. To me the iPad is a much better value. The iPod touch is just too small as a reading device. I feel 7" devices are too small too.

Since I have an iPhone and netflicks I guess I have to buy the new iTV. I'm realizing that this will never end. Apple is like a beautiful, somewhat evil woman.

Yeah, I was thinking this exact same thought. Steve Job's comment rings true as well, "At $299, Apple TV only appealed to hobbists, but at $99, everyone is going to want one."

We have two ATVs in our house. Great machines. Can't imagine still having to shuffle DVDs and CDs around the house.

"does anybody know of good Point of Sale software for iPad?"

Here's a product developed for the iPhone, so it should also run on the iPad, too.

The company is Quickpay Merchant Services, the product is called Roampay. The cost is "pennies per transaction."

Great, we'll have to narrow it down to whichever is most cost effective. Some are a absolute rip off. Others are like normal CC terminal fees which is fine.

Back from our first trip out with our iPad.. it worked flawless. The 3G is faster than most wifi connections we got and seemed to have connectivity almost anywhere along the Pacific Coast. One thing we found out while traveling is logging into certain apps like Facebook and posting things.. it thinks you are a "bot" or a Scammer trying to get into your account because your location keeps moving. Yosh's FB account actually became locked and she had to prove to them who she was.

Other than that, it worked as expected and one night we actually used it as music around a campfire.

Just bought mine two weeks ago. This thing is awesome. I got the wifi only version, because I jailbroke my iPhone and am tethering it with the iPad. Cheaper iPad and paying only one data service plan.

A pre-release build of iOS 4.2 for iPad has been made available to registered Mac developers, along with pre-release versions for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

A few of the features noted: Improved performance, multitasking for more applications, folders to organize your files, improvements in the Mail application, the Notes application can select fonts. The Gizmodo folks found that AirPrint worked with one application.

There are eight weeks to go before the free iOS 4.2 upgrade is supposed to be released.

I have had a ipad for a bit and I have a overland trip I plan to do in 2 weeks.

I have the 3g/WiFI/GPS 16GB version but I don't have any 3G service as it seemed like AT&T rates were preposterous.

Thanks for all the notes. I found some cool apps I think that might help along the way such as video editing and offline GPS maps.

I love that dash mount!! I feel like I should have that dash mount and I may order it. I went ahead and ordered a Waterproof cover for it, which would ROCK if that fit into the mount with the waterproof cover and the OTTER commuter case.

Do you think it would fit with that thin rubber cover and a thin waterproof bag over it snuggly into that dash mount?

I have a TJ and I ride with the top down a lot - which means I get caught in the rain a lot and of course getting the ipad wet would ruin the trip and my wallet!

I have used the iPad for months now, and IMO, it is magic, but flawed. For work purposes, it is not there yet. For travel, and everything else - pure magic.

I am now test a VNC, which should resolve the "work" side of things. That way I can run an insane Mac Pro desktop for work stuff and then just iPad and VNC for anytime I am mobile.

And the iPad fits in my tank bag on the KTM, like it was made for it :D

Parallels has introduced a free app for the iPad that enables a remote connection to a Parallels virtual machine running on your office Mac. So if you use Parallels to run Linix or Windows applications, you now can use your iPad to manage these apps. The iPad connection is made via the Internet, either WiFi or 3G.

I just received an iPad today. So far its been fun to use but it is really a big iPod Touch. It will be great for traveling but there is no way I could use it as my only computer. Surfing the net is fun with it though. I have yet to get into the apps, so I'm sure there is a whole element of this that I am missing.

Btw, mine is the basic 16gb wifi model.

i love my ipad - it took me away from the desktop - for better or worse - not sure yet - but a lot of things I do are now transfered to it. it's my first apple product - I'm not going to go mac on the desktop any time soon - this device is special.

It's freedom.

I am going to spring for the Proclip mount for the jeep - I now want to see if it can rock as the main computer for my expedition!

The best is unplugging it at 6:30AM, using it all day, and by 6PM, you still have 40% battery left. My laptop collects dust. Still use my desktop when at home, but when i head out, iPad always goes with me.
