I preload the maps for areas I'm traveling via the cache feature of Motionx GPS HD. I also have several other apps including Scenic and Offline Topo that carry maps as part of the install. Of course if you happen to be in an area with network connectivity it wouldn't be necessary to pre cache them... I still would.

Motion X has modified their server arrangement so maps download much quicker than before. Also maps can be backed up via itunes/ Motion X supports GPX import and export so you can share and use shared info with other GPS systems.

I've been in contact with Motion X support team to suggest new "off-road" features and GUI changes. They have been super responsive.

Just downloaded Scenic Maps for the western region. Also have Motion X. Will play with both along with the Dual XGPS-150 Bluetooth GPS for my 16GB wifi iPad. Will post my thoughts when done. So far I really like the simplicity of the SM software.

On another note, I just installed the Ram mount seat-rail mount in the 4runner and have fount the mount+ipad2+motionx on road and Gaia GPS off-road to be a STELLAR combination.

do you have a picture of the pad installed in your 4Runner? I was trying to figure out how to mount one, but wasn't sold on the seat rail mount w/o seeing it in a 5th gen.

I didn't read this thread and no nothing about the iPad. Can you read and store .PDF files or need app for it?

Yes and No, sorta. This is what I think happens, based on my limited experience with the iPad but LOTS of similar experience with iPhone:

From within an email or from a link on the internet, the iPad will open display PDF's very nicely using built in operating system app. However, to save them to your iPad into a folder requires a 3rd party App, of which there are MANY available.

I like GoodReader PDF

iPad in the news:

United Airlines and Continental Airlines have decided to issue iPads to their flight crews, loaded with the navigation maps and aids they need. No more heavy briefcases to carry onboard. About 11,000 iPads will be used for this purpose.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have given their players and coaches 90 iPads loaded with the team's plays. The iPads can be updated more easily than a paper notebook, and players can more easily find and view video of plays they want to review. The iPads have a remote erase capability if the team thinks a playbook has been lost.

Apple recently offered refurbished 16GB iPad 1 models for $299. (They seem to be sold out at this writing.) Check back to see what's available.

Logitech folding keyboard

Logitech is now selling a folding keyboard for iPad 2. The iPad 2, with or without Apple's iPad 2 cover, fits into a frame that is attached to the keyboard. When you're done using it, the keyboard splits in half and stores underneath the frame. It's a slick way to get a wide keyboard to store with the same dimensions as the iPad.

List price is $129, so keep an eye out for discounts online.

Here's a review with photos that show how the split keyboard works

Looking at the photos, the keyboard has cursor movement keys at the lower right corner of the keyboard. For people like me with fat fingers, it's nice to have cursor control at the keyboard.

Here's the product page on Logitech's website

Nice review Dan. Timely too, as I am about to buy a keyboard for my daughter (10) to use on her iPad 2. Most of her schoolwork these days is through GoogleDocs, so having a keyboard is going to help a lot.
