Bit Map enables you to use your own Bitmaps downloadet to your phone (and ECW's I belive).
There is Gaja GPS, pretty similar to Motion X GPS, I personally prefere Motion X but Gaja is not to bad either.

Star walk is another must for outdoor fans.

Pathaway is another gps one. http://www.pathaway.com/PWiPhone.htm
Pathaway was THE programm on the Palm platform, and worked superbly together with TTQV, OZI and Fugawi. You could download any map from TTQV into you handheld palm, exchange waypoints and tracks and so on. I use Pathaway for years overlanding incl. North Africa and Australia with no complaints at all.
Unfortunately the Iphone version depend exclusively on webbased maps, which get downloaded once, and then cached.(safed on the phone).

Edit: I actally just saw that the EXP still allows the use of customised maps, wich can either be created with a little Pathaway programm, or TTQV, Ozi or Fugawi.
That makes it very interesting for me.
Go ahead and have a close look. Seems like it got all you need in one single app.

After playing with Pathaway for a day I have to say i am stoked, all the goodies are back.
Nice to use a mixture of downloadet and my own maps.
Not cheap, but worth it.
All my other GPS apps will collect dust from now on...

DealMac reports that SquareTrade is offering its 2 year warranty for the iPad 2 for $70, down from the usual $100. Unlike the AppleCare warranty, SquareTrade covers damage due to accidental drops and spills, as well as hardware failure. While AppleCare is free for the first year, adding coverage for the second year costs $79.

The SquareTrade deal is available only today, Sunday, June 5.

My wife brought her Ipad to Australia last time. She won't do it again. It was useless even in Outback towns that offer Telstra 3G service.
What good is a device in an expedition camper if it only works at "WiFi hotspots"?

A WiFi-only iPad works with the hotspot technology available in the country you're traveling in. For example, you could use a Telstra 3G hotspot in Australia, and then a Verizon 4G hotspot in USA. That said, changing hotspot contracts will probably be more expensive than changing cell carrier data contracts just for the iPad.

Signing up for a WiFi hotspot also will give Internet access to several WiFi devices simultaneously, which is helpful if you're traveling with an iPad plus a computer. Some WiFi hotspots have input for an external antenna, which can boost the cell phone signal to usable levels when you're away from town. The iPad's antenna is built-in.

At the annual developers' conference in San Francisco, Apple announced that 25 million iPads have been sold in 14 months. Android phones may outsell the iPhone, but Android tablets have a way to go before they catch up to the iPad!

Today, there are 425,000 apps for iOS devices available in the Apple Store, of which about 80,000 take advantage of the iPad's larger screen.

I'm on my 3rd Blackberry phone and they haven't even started to begin to come close to offering as many apps as Apple and others do for the iphone and the ipad.

I waited several years for RIM to do so, still like the phone but I ordered a 64g wifi/3G ipad last week from Verizon for $399.

I think (hope) with the explosive sales of the tablets (all brands and models) that the app developers will start making the apps specifically for the larger screens, or adapting their curent apps to run better on the larger devices. Basically I think th times are 'a changin'.
(But we'll see where we sit in a year from now.)
I also agree that the one downside to the RIM products is the lack of apps, but now that they are going after the casual market moreso than they have ever done before, they hopefully will be pushing for more apps.
I've noticed a lot more of the Blacberry commercials geared towards casual or "fun" users lately rather than their previous sole market of businesses.
Also from what I've heard from insiders and from users the BB devices have no competition when it comes to the level of security that their devices and software offer.
Maybe this is one issue that conflicts with the ease of developing apps for their devices?

British Library apps for iPad

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/british-library-19th-century/id438196905?mt=8

The British Library has released an iPad app that has links to 1000 titles from the 19th century. Using the app, you can browse and search the titles, read commentary, and download for offline reading. Lots of interesting first person travel diaries and maps are included. Take a look here to get a better idea what sorts of volumes are included in the collection http://britishlibrary19c.tumblr.com

This app is free. In part, it's a marketing tool for an app called the "19th Century Historical Collection," which contains 60,000 volumes of literature. This app will appear later this year, and won't be free.

While on the subject of British Library works for iPad, there's an app called "Treasures" that offers commentary on collections and exhibits at the library. The app is updated regularly to reflect new exhibits. The price is $4. http://apps.toura.com/british-library/treasures

In addition to Haven's most recent post - through the university I have taken in the last year, there are a number of websites that are devoted to the process of digitizing older documents and books for free access online.
Most of the ones that I have been exposed to are associated with universities, and the access is free, but only if you're a university student, or somehow involved with an associated company or NGO etc...

Is anyone able to upload photos to this forum via their IPad? Mine doesn't recognize any folders on the iPad. I'm planning a long trip and was considering not taking a laptop.
