Apple Tablet: iPad

I've waited long enough for a knock your socks off android tablet.

I decided on the 32GB iPad 2 Verizon 3G. It's just came out and it's a sure bet.

Now to find the right apps!

I have been looking at the Ipad 2 3G but Im not really sure which model to get. Would topo maps etc take up enough memory to justify buying anything higher than a 16GB?? Im using it for school most of the time and would probably only download the maps for trips

This would probably depend on how large an area you want to have installed at one time.

From the TopoMaps app site:
How much memory space do the maps take?
This varies; some maps have a lot more details than others. Most are somewhere between 10 and 50 Mbytes. During installation, however, additional temporary storage is needed; the app may refuse to install a new map if you have less than about 250 Mbytes of free space.

It looks like there is literally over 1000 maps of Minnesota, for example, so if you wanted maps of the whole state you could easily fill up either the 16GB or the 32GB.

It looks like they added a relatively easy way to manage the maps, but you still need to download them through the app the first time.

So you could remove maps of areas that you infrequently visit to free up some space.

Hope that helps.

Given that I want to be able to have a decent amount of maps in addition to other material I guess I will have to go with the 64. Thanks for the help!

I bought a refurbished 1st gen 16GB wifi from the apple store online. It arrived from China in 5 days. Maybe in the future I'll miss having the dual processors but by then I'll probably be able to pass this one on to the wife and get a new one for myself.

The only problem I've found is that while a lot of the apps I have on my iPhone port over to the iPad, they show up on the screen in the same dimensions as the iPhone screen. I'm in the process of getting iPad sized apps.

Looks like Verizon got caught with too many iPads in inventory. According to Macrumors.com, Verizon's retail stores have lowered the price the iPad 1 as follows:

iPad 1 16 GB Wi-Fi only model ... $299.99

iPad 1 32 MB Wi-Fi only model ... $399.99

iPad 1 64 GB Wi-Fi only model ... $499.99

http://www.macrumors.com/2011/03/24...rst-generation-wi-fi-ipads-for-299-99-499-99/

That's lower than AT&T offered to clear out their iPad 1 models. It's also lower than Apple wants for refurbished iPads. Let's hope that the Verizon models sell out quickly so the value of my iPad 1 comes back up a little!

This is a good deal. Gives me pause to reconsider the order I just placed for a 64 GB Verizon ipad 2.

Web video provider Vimeo has a new app for the iPad 2, iPhone and iPod Touch. The app helps you edit video captured using the iPad 2's built-in camera. Or you can capture video right in the app. Editing features include transitions, titles and clip effects. You can also adjust the volume of the audio, and link in other video clips.

Once your clip is ready, the app helps upload to Vimeo's servers to share with the world. The app can send the link to your friends on Facebook, Twitter, by email, or to post to your WordPress blog.

The Vimeo app is free through the iTunes App Store. To upload video, you must also have a free account on the Vimeo web site.

Gazelle is a used equipment reseller that just started offering the original iPads. Prices are as follows:

iPad, 16 GB, WiFi only $330
iPad, 32 GB, WiFi only $400
iPad, 64 GB, WiFi only $420

iPad, 16 GB, WiFi and 3G $380
iPad, 32 GB, WiFi and 3G $420
iPad, 64 GB, WiFI and 3G $480

Payment is by credit card. Shipping starts at $8. Gazelle allows returns up to 30 days after purchase. The web site is http://www.gazelleipads.com/

These prices are less than Apple charges for refurbished original iPad models. However, Apple does provide a brand new battery, a new case, and a one year warranty with refurbished iPads. It's not clear if there is any warranty with sales through Gazelle.

Several app developers offer alternatives to the Safari web browser for the iPad. The alternatives offer features Safari lacks, such as:
-- tabbed browsing
-- faster speed
-- the ability to read web content offline
-- links to cloud storage such as Dropbox
-- customizable features like multi-touch gestures

Here are a couple of iPad-compatible browsers that were released or updated recently, and a few of their special features.

Opera 6.0 (tabbed browsing, load 2nd page in background, Opera server compresses cached web pages, free)
Atomic Browser (tabs, adblock, gestures, $1)
360 browser (tabs, Dropbox, Airprint, import Firefox bookmarks, $1)
Terra (tabs, full screen mode, multi-touch gestures, free)
iCab Mobile (tabs, download manager, offline mode, customizable interface, $2)
Mercury (tabs, gestures, ad blocking, Dropbox, $1)
BrowserDuo (show two web pages side by side)

What's your favorite iPad web browser?

Playing with opera not sure yet on the iPad prefer a more normal look and not have to switch to a desktop mode

Atomic is my main but having crash issues and tabs just go missing constant reloading pages etc... Sadly it's nice but aggravating and can't rely on it for going back a day later to where I was

I played with my brother-in-law's Blackberry Playbook last weekend.
It seems to have much more multi-tasking ability than the iPad. And I actually like the improved portability that the smaller sized Playbook gives you.
I'm hoping the app support on the BB devices will catch up to Apple sooner rather than later or never...
