One tip for night shots Rattler is not to take them at night :)

Normally they look better if shot at dusk so there is still a fair amount of detail in the photo. If necessary then double expose the lights half an hour later or when appropriate.

That said it's a nice shot with quite a lot of detail, maybe it was shot at dusk.

It was about 3 hours after sunset. I am limited on my time now. I liked my options when I was off work for a while. My hours were much more flexible but I have to get $$ to pay for more gear anyway.

What was even worse was weds. Night the conversation I had with a pro photog friend about the move to a full size. That's an expensive conversation. He was showing me the new Nikon Df. That thing is pretty neat.

move to a full size.
You mean FF sensors

I have 3 pro Canon bodies, they each cost about $5k and two were second hand (but very good condition). The only more expensive thing I have is one of my lenses.

BTW, Ken, I forgot to comment on the MV shot with the road and sunset. Nice. Likewise the Cedar Key shot Pat. Talk about two totally different environments.

Yea, I know they aren't cheap. My bro-in-law was over today and I wanted to confiscate his 5D he had (with a Sigma lens Pat!). I think my next lens is going to be the Tokina 16-24. They say it can be used on both sensors.

I've had the good fortune to photograph the Tetons from Snake River Overlook several times and in some pretty amazing conditions but this evening was the most awe-inspiring yet. The image was made in the days preceding a photography workshop I led in Grand Teton National Park. I used my recently deceased Canon 5D Mark II and a Canon 24-105mm lens, the same setup my son accidentally knocked over when he bumped into my tripod, sending the whole kit and caboodle crashing to the ground. #RIP5DII Let's hope insurance comes through so I can get a new camera in my hands soon. Or, if you feel really sorry for me and you'd like to contribute to the cause this image is available as a fine art print on my website. ;-)

Oooo that's nice, you'd think they'd chop all those trees down so you can get the classic curve of the river like you used to :)

So the 5D is dead, did the lens survive?

if you feel really sorry for me and you'd like to contribute to the cause
I'd love to, you buy one of mine and I'll buy one of yours :)

a photography workshop I led
I used to run landscape photography workshops, I really miss it, it's a great way to spend a day or two with like-minded people.

The lens is fine. Tiny scuff on the lens hood and that's it. The 5DII es no mas, though. Won't turn on. Did all the usual stuff, i.e. batteries out and back in, CF card out and back in, etc. Nada.

I'd love to get my hands on one of your prints! I think it might just have to wait a bit, though.

Leading workshops is a blast. I get much satisfaction from helping others clear hurdles that have been preventing them from becoming better photographers. Always fulfilling when you see that little light bulb go off in someone's head.

Wow. That is a helluva shot! RIP 5D MkII. My friend was just bragging up how good Canon's service is the other day. He has had his cameras and a couple lens serviced by them. He said they were pretty quick too.

That is a terrific shot, Bret. I can sympathize with your loss, I took a spill into a huge mud puddle and drowned my 5D, insurance would not cover it. I now have a rider on my Home Owners for camera equipment, an expensive lesson.

Oh man, that hurts! I've got full business coverage on all of my gear that is supposed to include virtually any kind of loss, including dropping or knocking over your camera. So, they should cover the loss but as insurance companies are all prone to do I've no doubt they'll do everything possible to try to get out of it.
