Astro AWD "Stroverlander"

Has anyone come up with a functional Z-bed for these vans? Something that mimics the usability/convertability of a vanagon's interior?

Stay tuned to my build thread for that one. This is my winter project, now that I've been informed I will not be needed to coach Science Olympiad this season. (Yaay!) I have purchased reproduction VW Z-bed hinges and will be gutting my van's interior, then starting with a fresh build including integrated cabinets, a bed-box with Z-bed hinges, water tank, etc.

Pictures, etc. of course will follow once I get to work - just finalizing the paper design right now.

Dude, you live in SAN DIEGO!

Exactly. December/January is a productive time for me because it's in between Mountain season and Desert Season! Plus it's when my job slows down a bit (post CES show, etc.) I'm glad I live in a place where I can actually work outside this that time of year - the Astro doesn't fit into a garage!

I hear ya, brother. I got two garages and my van doesn't fit into either one!

As always, looking forward to your progress reports.

And I thought I had it good in the SE, but nothing like that!

No garage fit for me either, I don't think you can call it a minivan if it doesn't fit in a garage. :REExeSquatsHL1:

Happy holidays all, so much to be thankful for this year and wish you all well. :roost:

My garage is 7 foot tall so i have no hope at all, I was really hoping that the van with the ccv top would suck into an 8 foot garage..... So that maybe it would fit in our next house. Once i choose to have the vent fan put on top i am over 8 and there is no hope. The ccv top is far from low profile but i am really happy with the space it affords. The upside to this is now i can stop pretending that i am going to get my vehicle in and turn my side of the garage into a proper shop :wings:

Corbeau Baja XRS Seats

Lately things have been progressing slowly with Stroverlander for many different reasons but recently was able to sell the original leather seats to fund the purchase of new, aftermarket sport seats. My two choices were both from Corbeau, the Sport Seat or newer Baja XRS and having had GTS II seats in my old '97 Safari awd, I was interested in something with less aggressive side bolster on the seat base to ease entry and exit yet still offering additional support.

In the end I went with the Baja XRS for a few reasons - comparatively, the seat base was slightly longer and the extra support is nice if you have longer legs, the memory foam sounded tempting and they are a suspension seat, if perchance I should ever require such a feature! I chose full black vinyl over cloth inserts due to ease of cleaning/care and longevity. My old GTS II seats were black cloth which faded and wore through the side bolsters over time so hopefully the vinyl holds up better.

I purchased the seats from apexperformance.net and can't say enough about them, very helpful, pleasant to deal with and great pricing! I actually purchased my other Corbeau seats from them about ten years ago, so repeat customer too. I'll be looking to add seat heaters and maybe seat saver covers at some point so they'll get my business again for sure.

With the LT package my van came with leather seats and power driver's seat base but I wanted to ditch that and go manual so picked up another seat base at the local pick/pull yard for the driver's side that came with a bonus under seat sliding drawer I'll add to the passenger seat.

I still have the Corbeau seat brackets from my old seats but not where I am installing these seats, so couldn't use anyway and didn't want to drop another couple hundred dollars in new brackets while thinking I could make do without. I also don't like how much the Corbeau brackets raise the seat height inside the van, a little extra height goes a long way.

In the end, after receiving the seats and measuring bolt patterns, I continued with the power seat base for the driver's seat because there was enough metal to easily drill attachment points for the Corbeau mounting holes. It was very straight forward using the template I made as a guide. I had to do some minor trimming to the seat base side cover metal bracket and plastic trim so the seat would sit flat on the base. I just zip-tied the side covers to the old mounting points to keep everything in place until the seat was bolted down.

Basic template bolted to stock mounting points on power base and marked for Corbeau bolt pattern

The power seat base is shown on the passenger side for ease of test fitment here

I didn't take any photos of the passenger seat manual base install but was able to use two of the mounting holes on the Corbeau seat and drill two more while keeping it as close to centered as possible. I'll be taking the seats back out again to vacuum the carpet (metal shavings) so will add some additional photos then.

Installed, super comfortable, plenty of adjustment, very close to stock height and don't slide around anymore while driving.

While perusing the pick/pull yard, I came across a few NP233 transfer case candidates so when budget allows will pull one with wiring/tccm/switch... :088:

I would have to build an arm high box between the seats if I lost the arm rests (or simply drop in a small yeti cooler). I had those same seats in an old corvette I had and thought they were quite comfy but I didn't need an arm rest there. The whole car was an arm rest.

Thanks! I usually travel with a small cooler between the seats and haven't measured yet but appears to be about the same amount of room as stock.

A fridge is on the list somewhere, just pretty far down there right now. I don't travel with much that really requires refrigeration although I just picked up a couple of late 70s / early 80s vintage Coleman white gas stoves (three burner and two burner) at a nice bargain so that may change. I'll maybe plan for some nicer culinary delights than I usually put together with my MSR Whisperlite International for sure. :chef:

Removed the seats one more time to vacuum remaining metal shavings out of carpet, re-torque fasteners and take a few more photos of seats married to bases.

Power seat base, can see original mounting holes with side covers are zip-tied in place and new mounting points (using original seat flange bolts) to match Corbeau pattern, pretty much same at the rear of base.

Manual base, not much to see. Aligned two holes on one side (front and rear) and drilled out the other side and used nuts to secure on backside. There is just enough room between seat cushion bottom and metal frame to get a nut and wrench behind there. When drilling, I sandwiched a flat piece of metal between the seat and bracket to keep from drilling into the seat cushion.

FIY, if attempting similar install, be sure to mount seat base to floor of van so it's in the correct position otherwise measurements can be off due to tracks not being properly aligned.

While out, I took the liberty of blacking out the logos which is more my style, in photos, they look siver-ish, not sure why but it is actually a dark gray so slight contrast which looks much better.

Back logos blacked out, hard to see with sunlight contrast.

Nice van!
It's "Bread Van" here by the way. Gotta tell you, I've spent the last couple of weeks agonizing, again, over whether or not I want to ditch the Astro in favor of true SUV. Been poking around reading about Monteros, Troopers, 4runners etc. Been doing lots of measuring, calculating, etc and, any way you slice the Astro has nearly twice the cargo volume of any of those. When 2 people are travelling, with 3 dogs between us now, I just can't see giving up the space. Love the Astro, Hope yours is still treating you well!

I've been considering one of these for use between the seats. Wouldn't be too tough to add another layer...like a security drawer or something similar under it...and bring it up to armrest height.

My only hesitation at the moment is that I like having that spot clear for walking to the back and placing a small snack cooler for trips.
